In an upcoming London revival of Tony Kushner‘s brilliant epic Angels in America, Andrew Garfield will play flamboyant Prior Walter, while Russell Tovey, whose shirtless torso has been known to cause audiences to faint, will take on the role of closeted Mormon Joe Pitt.
Barry Manilow (pictured above with event promoter Jeffrey Sanker) was a surprise attendee at White Party over the weekend. Queerty hears the legendary entertainer popped by the T Dance on Sunday with his hubby and longtime manager Gary Kief. It’s unknown how he obtained that pearl necklace.
If there’s one thing Barbra Streisand fans know, it’s that their idol doesn’t take no for an answer (remember Yentl?). After countless setbacks it seems her long anticipated film adaptation of Gypsy is on again with director Barry Levinson at the helm.
Queen’s Brian May claims he and bandmates vetoed Sacha Baron Cohen in the proposed biopic of the late, insanely great Freddie Mercury, not the other way around. His hope is that out actor Ben Whishaw will eventually play the singer.
How about we take this to the next level?

She’d better work…NeNe Leakes serves some RuPaul realness on an upcoming episode of Lip Sync Battle.

I saw the Angels in America production at Roundabout a few years ago and it was amazing.
Interestingly, both Joe and Prior showed full frontal nudity in it. Will Andrew and Russell go full frontal as well?

Wow holy shit this oughtta be interesting!

Nene Leakes is a drag queen with a vajayjay, so who could give Rupaul realness better than her? Lineysha Sparx, that’s who.
Pistolo
Oh yay! it’s the old Hollywood rule of if you gotta have two gay guys in a show, one has to be played by a hot straight actor. Oh brrrrother.
ingyaom
Love Ben Whishaw… but not for Freddie Mercury.
Invert
@Pistolo: that’s because of the rarity of gay men in theatre….

God I hope Babs doesn’t intend to play Madam Rose, after Bette’s version I doubt she can do better.

…Andrew and Russell set my pulse racing, I want to have both of them in bed with me!!

Tovey playing the character crippled by internalized homophobia. cough cough.

@Dave Downunder: Bette was so over-the-top, it was like watching a drag version of Gypsy. She had all the subtlety and finesse of a Sherman tank. Even at 75 Barbra wouldn’t need to try too hard to be more nuanced.
Sluggo2007
The made for television version of “Gypsy” with Bette Midler was lousy on every level. Just because Bette was in it, didn’t guarantee it was going to be great and it wasn’t. That being said, I don’t think it’s a very smart move if Barbra does it now. Everyone dragged their feet on this one for a long time and Barbra is DEFINITELY too old to play that role now. Even with the proper makeup, everybody knows how old she is and that’s what everyone will be talking about (and the critics are sharpening their claws as I post this.)

@OzJosh: I really looked forward to Midler’s version, and no, it was not good. I read once that someone suggested to Streisand she should do a Broadway “Gypsy” revival when she was in her 30’s (the right age for it) and she was “insulted”. Several years ago at a Carol Burnett book signing I babblingly said how much I wished she’d play Mama Rose (it had been in the works years before), and she said, “That was a LONG time ago”–meaning, “I’m too old now”. But she was younger then than Streisand is now, and I actually think she’d have been (after the Merm) the best Mama.
