I’m a gay man who lives in Russia, so I know about this whole ordeal.
Madonna lawsuit is just a loud publicity stunt for those who want to distract Russians from real political, social and financial problems Russia is facing these days. (Who doesn’t, huh?) About a year ago gay-bashing suddenly became a trending thing after some Christians lobbied for passing laws against the so-called “propaganda of homosexuality”, whatever the hell that means, no one can really answer.
What I’m trying to say is, it was never an issue much, the whole thing was mostly underground, and suddenly someone decided this is the perfect time to start exploiting the uneducated hatred of the Russian people against “the gays”.
All I can think of now is how Gandhi was right saying, “First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win.” That is really what’s going on these days in Russia in terms of gay rights. We’re past the disregard and laughter parts, now they are fighting us, beating us, pursuing us, trying to jail us, scare us, what have you. So, the next step is when we win. And it’s all happening so fast — that part is something I didn’t foresee, and am glad I was mistaken thinking a couple of years ago this process would take decades.

@K!r!lleXXI: Dear Kirill,
Don’t lose that faith but unite and organize by using the law to your advantage, if that’s possible. Perhaps, you might consider getting in contact with Madonna (her people) and asking what she could do to help or even refer the gay community to a human rights group. She did go public here on behalf of the band that was arrested for speaking their mind. We had our stonewall back in the day, perhaps it’s time Russia has theirs, we’re still fighting but things have improved over time and this holds true. Perhaps they didn’t want publicity, but they sure have it now.
It seems in life we have to fight for our rights, then we have to fight to keep them.
