This Jeremy Meeks story is getting worldwide attention and it’s reached a bizarre level of publicity. Yes, he’s insanely handsome. But he’s still a criminal. And yet you have these stupid, stupid, STUPID women who are desperately trying to raise the money for his $900,000 bail and constantly calling the prison to try and check up on him. These women aren’t going to be lusting after him once he robs them and slits their throat.
It kind of reminds me of when Scott Peterson was arrested for murdering his wife and unborn child because he wanted to start a new life with his mistress. After being arrested and convicted of murder, he got thousands of love letters and marriage proposals from women because of how handsome he was.
Good looking people really do have it well. There’s so many morons out there willing to overlook any disgusting thing you have done simply because you’re hot.

As for the line you found nonsensical, listen to it again. But even if he left the line unchanged, why wouldn’t it make sense? He’s asking his lover because his lover “know[s] about these things.” The “things” being his intentions. Makes perfect sense. When I first saw Jeremy Meek’s mugshot, I wondered what the fuss was all about. The face didn’t do too much for, probably because of the distracting tattoos. Ugh. Or maybe it’s because I live in Soho, NYC and am surrounded by models (a few years ago, the apt next to mine was inhabited by 3 male models). Naomi Campbell owned an apt just 2 blocks from me. So maybe I’m just jaded. Then I watched a video of him waiting arraignment, and then an interview and … ZOWIE! Despite being surrounded by model types, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a man who was so naturally model-ish. I mean, he was modeling without trying. As he waited for the judge, his angular body lines and posture showed the instincts of a model. The way his face, and especially his eyes, looked at the video camera was amazing. Despite his criminality, his eyes suggested a soulful vulnerability. Tyra Banks talks about “smyzing” — or smiling with the eyes (see tutorials on YouTube). This guy could teach Tyra a few things.
I’ll probably upload both the CNN and Nightline stories on him because both acknowledged his gay fans.

The Jeremy Meeks Phenomenon. By now there are shelves of books about people who pursue guys like him, that explore the bizarre phenomenon of women (I suppose this could apply to men too) who pursue relationships with hardcore criminals. Rapists, murderers, whatever–it doesn’t seem to matter how vicious the crime. Some time ago I came across a fascinating book on this subject, written before the Internet era so the attraction wasn’t really about drop-dead beauty.
According to the author, several things seem to be going on with women (and men?) like this. They are desperately needy and so become steeped in denial, insisting to anyone who will listen that the object of their devotion is innocent and–a key word–“misunderstood.”
If they actually succeed in meeting the guy they will believe whatever story he tells them no matter how self-serving or contradictory, and ignore evidence of guilt no matter how compelling. They send him money regularly, go broke paying for lawyers, offer themselves in marriage, and become estranged from family and friends in their misguided loyalty.
And many of these women have sad histories of abuse, either in previous relationships, or they grew up in homes where they watched their fathers abuse their moms. They’ve been conditioned by their experiences to see thuggery and violent criminality as “strength” and felons as “real men.”

@LadyL: By coincidence, this has just been in the news, even before the Meeks phenomenon. Damien Echols of the West Memphis Three is out promoting his book, and was on CNN three days ago. As part of the interview, CNN did a story on women are obsessed with imprisoned men. Many of the women eventually marry the men, despite a life sentence. As an aside, wasn’t one of the Menedez brothers gay? I ask because both are now married to women.
That said, it’s important to differentiate between merely finding Meeks PHYSICALLY attractive, and being obsessed with him, body and soul. Many of us who think he’s handsome/sexy would never consider coming (cumming?) within touching distance of him. Nor are we under any illusion that he’s a good man. Physical attraction is beyond our control. Proposing marriage is fully within our control.

@MMDD: I really love Smith’s version because he actual performs the song as opposed to just singing it. He makes you think that there is a backstory behind the lyrics, and each line has a subtext beyond the written words. Perhaps most importantly, he connects with the song, implying that he’s lived — or is living — the story. It’s one the reasons I love showtunes. A song can mean so much more if there is external context. My favorite example has always been Sondheim’s “Our Time” from Merrily We Roll Along. The scene features three teenagers planning the rest of their lives. It’s often sung at graduations for the incredibly hopeful and naively optimistic lyrics. But when taken in context, it’s a devastating statement of failure — the opposite of what most people think. Another example is The Police’s classic, “Every Breath You Take.” Most people sing it as a love song, but Sting says that it’s a dark song about obsession and stalking. Along those lines, Whitney’s version is a fun fluffy romp that leaves me as soon as the music ends. Sam’s version still has me thinking, although I heard it 5 hours ago.

And the European and African in Brazil had a longer and more everyday contact then the Indigenous people. So I would say that Africa had everything to do with your stunning classmates dark skin. But there are many Central, South American and Caribbean people, where over 90% of all African slaves went, who have dark skin, kinky or curly hair, full lips,
(Where it’s obvious there is African blood), will deny the obvious. Whether this is simple ignorance of not knowing ones history, or self hate through brain washing, is anyones guess. I say a bit of both…
