There are amazing stories about Freddie Mercury. The guy was wild. He was living an extreme lifestyle [of] debauchery. There are stories of little people with plates of cocaine on their heads walking around a party. It [becomes] a less interesting movie, but you’ve got to remember — and I understand it — they are a band, they want to protect their legacy as a band, they want it to be about Queen. And I fully understand that. [After] my first meeting, I should never have carried on because a member of the band, I won’t say who, he said, ‘This is such a great movie because such an amazing thing happens in the middle of the movie.’ I go, ‘What happens in the middle of the movie?’ He goes, ‘Freddie dies.’ I go, ‘So you mean, it’s a bit like Pulp Fiction, the end is the middle, and the middle is the end? That’s interesting.’ He goes, ‘No no no.’ So I said, ‘Wait a minute, what happens in the second half of the movie?’ And he said, ‘Well, we see how the band carries on from strength to strength.’ And I said, ‘Listen, not one person is going to see a movie where the lead character dies from AIDS, and then you carry on to see [what happens to the band].”Sacha Baron Cohen during an interview with Howard Stern and speaking about ending his involvement with the Freddie Mercury biopic

Preach! Can anyone name anything Queen has done since Freddie died other than play the greatest hits?
Wait for the band to die off or do a Freddie biopic without their blessing.
Joshua Grubb
Without Freddie they would have been barely above average
Victor Barry
He has a point.
Brian
Queen was no longer queen when Freddie passed away.
Liam Barnes
Yeah, I have my doubts about Mr. Cohen’s account.
Brian Kelly-Ried
They have been a shadow of their former self, the original bass player John Deacon isn’t even involved in the regroup. It should have been like zeppelin, when John bonham died they called it a day.
AJ Legault
Sorry Queen,,, it was ALL About Freddie. Sasha would have delivered Freddie!
John Malin
Well, whatever his reasons were, if your heart is not in it, it’s best to just slink away, than stay and stink anyway!
Billy Budd
The movie should be about Freddie, not about Queen. Baron Cohen is RIGHT.
Stache
Never saw a biography where they talked about just the band. It was always about Freddie.
Dave Downunder
Queen have had a nothing but controversy in their dealings with others while trying to keep the band going after Freddie’s death. I think they are a little deluded.
Kenover
Freddie was Queen and Queen was Freddie. Who are they kidding?
Mark Ilvonen
Too bad, he would have been amazing in the role.
o.codone
No doubt about it.

I wonder if it was Brian May who said it? Would the film have shown how Freddie was bisexual? SBC is better playing his own comedy characters and not in serious roles.

Is it because he’s a talentless wankpigeon?

notes, “Queen is one of my all time favorite bands, their music having gotten me through several crisis as a teenager to a point where Freddie singing to (Me) every person either ‘don’t try suicide’ or ‘just keep passing the open windows’ actually kept self-destructive actions at bay. But the truth is a band by its very nature is completely about the synergy of those members involved. Rarely does that sustain when one or more members choose to leave. It is interesting to see that in order to perform any of their material with anything approaching the same energy they must use multiple singers because no one singer embodies what Freddie brought to the mix. Even touring with Adam Lambert is really not the same, tho’ the boy does well, one can not hope for replacement, but merely succession.”

Glad I got to see them. Freddie was awesome, but it was a group, not an individual up there.
Brent Labee
it wasn’t raunchy enough for him?

This may be controversial, but Queen were more than just Freddie Mercury.
There’s no doubt that whatever band was lucky enough to have Freddie fronting it would automatically be a global sensation, but saying “Freddie WAS Queen” is downplaying the musical talents of May, Taylor & Deacon, all of whom were amazing musicians in their own right.
However, a biopic of Freddie Mercury should be exactly that. Not a showcase for Queen before, during & after Freddie’s death.
If SBC’s comments are to be believed, then that is a different biopic altogether.
I dont want to be iconoclastic here. Freddie was awesome! He was not only an immensely talented singer/songwriter/musician, but he was also a charismatic, poetic and self-deprecatingly honest man at a time where rock stars were expected to play to a perceived macho stereotype. Hell, even Elton John denounced his homosexuality and sued “The Sun” for printing articles on his sexuality at the time.
But as a group, Queen were all amazing singers/songwriters/musicians and saying that one out-of-this-world character defined the rest of the band is doing them all a great disservice.
