Sacha Baron Cohen's Bruno Just As Offensive As We Hoped

bruno

As we watch and await the decision from the Vermont House on whether it will pass its version of the gay marriage amendment (they're having dinner right now), we thought we'd give you, out loyal readers, something a little more exciting to watch. Presenting your first look at Bruno. If you're easily offended, turn away.

I won't watch it. I'm offended that once again a haterosexual is portraying a gay person. Where are the movies with gay people playing haterosexuals in unkind ways?

I heard they're trying to edit it down to get an R rating…please, please, please let there be enough vulgar sex scenes so that Bruno surpasses Borat's sister as #1 prostitute in all Turkmenistan.

PRESS RELEASE FROM THE POSH OFFICES OF MICHAEL LUKAS

RE: "BRUNO"

Yes, it is true. I am not really Micheal Lucas. I am in fact a fictional character created by Sacha Baron Cohen.

PS: I did not adopt a black child. I adopted Brett Corrigan 10 years ago.

I named him Lil' Kocis

@GayIsTheWay: Although not a movie, Neil Patrick Harris is an open gay man making fun of straight male whores on How I Met Your Mother. I believe straight male whores are a segment that's under represented in comedy.

@TANK: Do you in your mind see these two as equivalent? A character who is supposed to be a critique of our society through parody versus a politician who is supposed to be concerned with doing what's right for our society. I question your equivalency. This sounds like classic apples and oranges to me.

Yes, I see them as the same, the gay numbers. I see bruno as actually more important to the gay community than barney frank.

Critique of our society? LMAO! You poor thing.

@GayIsTheWay: you miss understand the whole concept of bruno.
lets look at borat for a minute- cohen didn't create borat to make fun of kazakhstanis, he was making fun of those who are so ignorant as to believe someone like this could exist. He was created to reveal prejudices, basically to make fun of stupid people.

bruno isn't a critique of the gay community, he is a critique of its treatment and perception by society. he is tool to extract the essence of culture war today, unadulterated bigotry and irrational fear. His critique of fashion, celebrity trends, and superficiality are applicable to the larger culture of which we are apart.

@alan brickman: he had a show based in britain, with these characters. I don't think it is the focus of this moving, but i do think he recognizes homophobia, xenophobia, and racism in britain.

Anyone who thinks Bruno is making fun of gay men is headless and totally missing the point. The joke is on the homophobes. Sacha Baron Cohen brought out racism and antisemitism in his witless victims with such exact and blistering artistry. I can't wait to see him do the same for homophobia with Bruno. Word is he got Ron Paul to call him a queer. How can gays criticize THAT?

@GayIsTheWay:
Oh codswallop.

That doesn't invalidate their work at all. You brought it up; We had a bit of fun with it. Now don't start adding conditions and making this into something bigger than it is or I'll have to mention Charles Nelson Reilly as Hoodoo and Graham Chapman in virtually every role he played, in a dress or not.

But back to the movie in question…
If your nose is out of joint perhaps it's because Cohen doesn't skewer people because they are gay or straight, but because they take things way too seriously.

No. 25 · The Gay Numbers

@strumpetwindsock: Based on the trailer, I think the more accurate description of the satire is that he's making fun of our culture. Not just that we take culture too seriously, but look how insane we really are as a society, especially when you stick this comic character into the mix to push our crazy-button. The character is over the top for a reason- because without Bruno being over the top we would not get to see how over the top crazy that we are as a society. "Look at how they respond to this over the top gay guy. Look at how over the top they are to protect their cultural beliefs." That's what I think he's saying. At least, again that's what I get from the trailer. Some people can handle that mirror. Some can not. There's nothing unique about people not being able to look in the mirror like this. For example, read up on the response to Archie Bunker or the website StuffWhitePeopleLike.com. In each case, there were people just like GayIsTheWay who did not understand or know how to respond to it.

@GayIsTheWay: Hello! Mission Impossible 1 and

I think this is going to be funny and as a black woman I was not offended by the "angry black women" in the trailer. This guy (Sacha Baron Cohen) a brit knows how to skewer us Americans, it is never mean spirited. He shows the homophobia, sexism,anti-semitism, and racism of everyday people in a way that is funny and that underlines how silly it is to homophobic,racist, anti-semitic, or sexist. To me these are gut-busting funny after school specials for grown-ups. I say rock on Bruno I will be buying a ticket!

@Andrew Triska: Weak.

Heterosexuals already don't take responsiblity for anti-gay bigotry so why would they believe the joke is on anti-gay bigots instead of gay people? Whenever a famous anti-gay bigot says something you hear and see a chorus of people saying that person must be gay. Wrong. Almost all anti-gay bigots are heterosexuals. Jim McGreevey, Mark Foley, Ted Haggard etc are reflections of heterosexuals. They pretended to be heterosexual and anti-gay bigotry was apart of the cover. Since coming out they support gay rights.

This whole thing saddens me. I get the point that is trying to be made with "Bruno" but I know the majority of Americans won't and will just go look at the funny "fag." As a single gay man who has adopted a black this weighs heavy on my heart and promotes the discrimination my son and I already go through. It simply isn't funny.

My concern with the Bruno movie is the number of gay teens insecure about there sexuality, and what they might think of themselves after viewing the movie. Can you imagine sitting in a full cimema watching Bruno while the rest of whole cinema is laughing at homophobic jokes. Im hoping that maybe Bruno might showup and make fun of hetrosexuals so the movie is not one big gay joke.

First of all didn't find the previews the least bit funny! 38 you don't ever again come on this page refering to any gay person as f*g that is just terribly direspectful and distateful as an edjucated adult if you weren't you might not be blogging here! Just because I as a 21 year old gay person who has been through a whole lot of hateful shit from many heterosexuals of human kind doesn't mean that gives me any right to judge anyone. To some I think the lines between what is edjucating someone helping them with some laughs and plain o fucking homophobia have been blured. Try watching someone get the hell beat out of them because they are gay and someone says they are a level 3 sex offender but this person is only 19 years of age just trying to do better with their life and then tell me if this bullshit is funny when some of you sexy ass people go see it please enjoy this, might I add Heterosexual male making fun of me you and all of us during a time where just wanting to be equal is so damn hard! I was on the streets at 19 no I am not the sex violater just a witness to extreame homophobia the guy was too strong for me to fight at the time I would have f***ed him up if I could have he beat this guy from seconds to dieing all because of what someone else said in 2007! I got my life together at 20 years of age making fun of anyone does not edjucate that hate is wrong it says that hate is great Bruno isn't even gay I am a Christian and I love Jesus but I am still gay and this movie is not going to help homophobia be looked at as a bad thing it is going to reward it I am angry at this and just because Sacha Baron Cohen is playing a gay charachter and I am gay doesn't mean he understands or is trying to help me or anyone like me he doesn't understand what a beautiful thing it is to be a homosexual if he did he wouldn't have to do this trifalent shit and for the record Bruno does not represent me or my gay boy and men friends all the gay people I know even on the enternet are strong beutiful and tough as hell I love all gay men even the ones who agree with homophobic bullshit from a straight guy none the less Bruno is a sindakit vandictive monster to gay rights causes and the gay community!!!!! Holla at your gay lady man sexxy baba's!!!!!
