From a young age food has controlled me…When I was at school and wasn’t having a great time or when music wasn’t going very well, I would eat, eat. Eating would make me feel better. When I felt lonely, I would eat. If someone called me fat, that affects me way more than someone calling me a faggot. I think just because I’ve accepted that, if someone calls me a faggot, it’s like, I am gay and I’m proud to be gay so there’s no issues there. But if someone calls you fat, that’s something I want to change.”

what blind idiot would call him fat??

I mean he’s not skinny, but that doesn’t mean he’s fat.

…and not ugly? Oops. Said it. Apologies.

“Faggot” is an insult. “Fat” is a state of being and a very unhealthy lifestyle choice. If he thinks being fat is offensive, then it’s his own fault for choosing to gain weight.
Wait, is that him?
Who the hell called him fat?!
Does he REALLY think he’s fat?
Stephen Meeks
An excellent response.
Richard Molinar
O god another celebrity with body image issues.
Victor Barry
I’d do him.

A bundle of sticks is ok then? But fat isn’t ?
David Red
How about a whiny one-trick pony? How does he feel about being called that?

He’s lost a lot of weight over the past year, look at old pics.
Deon Letsoalo
I hate him and his sappy whiny songs make me nauseous.

Some people are naturally supposed to be a certain body type. Now his head looks like it is too big for his body. Reminds me of those people that get weight loss surgery and lose a massive amount of weight quickly. They become a fat head on a skinny body.

@Paco: That’s because he lost fat and did not gain muscle… if he gained muscle, the size of his head wouldn’t be as noticeable.
Jackhoffsky
Sam Smith isn’t fat. He looks like Peter Griffin (The Family Guy) who is fat. Smith is just fat by association… but he himself is not fat.
Pistolo
How will he react if I say that fat or thin, he always looks silly and writes stupid, soft-rock music?
Dale Landefeld
not much help to our community…you idiot….and you are fat!

I can relate. The crux of my existence, and perhaps my greatest fear (of public humiliation) as a child, was being called a “fat faggot”. Said fear provided me with the unnecessary stigmas and weighty defense systems that robbed me a key part of my youth. Keep in mind, Mr. Smith is still quite young. In time, I hope that he will come to accept himself at greater depths (his body image, and psychological health being paramount among them).
Despite what you think of him (and the claws, ladies, have come out), his accomplishment is nothing worth of discredit. He has done, what other out, gay men have seldom done before. I guess it is foolish to have him accepted for that, and find love in this community…

OK so everyone is fat shaming now without any knowledge of those issues either. It never ceases to surprise me when people who are subject to so much prejudice and stereotyping, display exactly the same characteristics themselves.
Maybe what goes around comes around, and people should just stop hating on others.

So a derogatory statements is ok??? Is fat is the worst thing I’m called I’d be thrilled.
dhmonarch89
it’s great that he’s lost some weight- but he still has that face- that was the problem for me- never his weight- just not attracted to him.
Chris
We carry our own issues from when we were children into our adulthood. No matter what anyone says to him, he will think of himself as that overweight kid people picked on. The real question is whether he’ll learn how to stop those negative thoughts and get on with it. [The second question, of course, is whether any boy friend of his will become eventually exasperated with his constantly asking: “does this make me look fat?”]

Personally, I’ve found that it’s a lot more upsetting to be called fat than to be called a f****t. When somebody using a slur like that, I generally decide that they’re an asshole and their opinion doesn’t matter. If someone calls me fat, then I guess that just preys on my insecurities a lot more. But that doesn’t in any way make it acceptable to use those types of slurs. It might not hurt me as much, but I definitely have issues with it. Just because Sam Smith doesn’t personally feel hurt by it does not mean that he shouldn’t have any issues with it.

What is wrong with you guys?? If you don’t got something nice to say don’t say anything at all.
Dan Fitzgerald
he should be okay with being fat, too
