The Eagle Tavern in San Francisco’s SOMA, which attracts a crowd of leather daddies and blue collar types, will be closing at the end of this month. But not, the bar’s operators insist, because it’s suffering any financial problems — but because the owner of the building wants to ditch the gay haunt in exchange for more lucrative luxury condos, supposedly. The building’s owner listed the building for sale a few months ago and now reportedly refuses to sign the Eagle to a long-term lease. [photo via]

Oh no, one less SF gay bar that smells like poop and pee.

Funny the owners are saying they don’t want to sell, and it’s not financial. They told the Bay Area Reporter something different last year http://www.ebar.com/news/article.php?sec=news&article=4496

It’s a leather bar – it should be in a nice dark place away from Gentrification anyway.

It’s much more than a leather bar. (and it’s really NOT a leather bar, it’s more of a biker bar with a strong group of Leather folk who go there). If You go to one of their Sunday Beer Busts, it’s one of the very few places (that I know of) where there are really diverse people. Some are pretty, some are not. Some are porn actors, some are old guys from El Cerito. It’s actually an incredible place, and I will be sad to loose it.

Gentrification is a stupid word for people who can’t cope with the fact that business owners are better off getting paid than catering to so called “authentic” townspeople.

Three months before I go to San Francisco for the first time, dammit.

Is there a chance they will relocate? I’m sure they can find a similar space in that area to reopen. Just a thought.
