Skins‘ Lesbian Character: Parents Just Don’t Understand

The Parents Television Council, that is. With the reactionary conservative group calling MTV’s new series Skins “the most dangerous show for teens,” and networks execs worrying whether their hit new show might be considered child pornography, Sofia Black D’Elia — the 18-year-old actress who plays lesbian cheerleading sex-hungry Tea — doesn’t understand what all the fuss is about.

“All I can say is that as an actor on the show I’m proud of everything that we’ve done,” D’Elia tells Steppin’ Out. “We created something that we really care about. We feel the show has so much heart and so much potential and can impact so many teenagers. … For parents who are afraid to let their children watch the show, they probably have some serious trust issues with their kids if they think they can be that easily persuaded by a television series. … We’re not raising America’s children, parents are! If you’re nervous about it, watch it with them. Maybe it will be a great conversation starter on topics they normally aren’t comfortable talking about with their kids, like sex and drugs. Many adults are missing the point when they complain about the show.”

Nothing says healthy family time like watching two high school chicks go down on each other. Dad will really like that.

The lesbian character is the least of this show’s problems. The white Liberal reaction to the “reactionaries” ignores one glaring fact: The show sucks.
