So Not Portlandia! Gay-Bashing Suspect Arrested In Oregon’s Hipster City

We could see this news story being lifted from the headlines as an unexpected plotline on Portlandia, the IFC’s cult-favorite show featuring frequently cross-dressing Fred Armisen and bisexual Carrie Brownstein.

The Oregonian reports that police have arrested Paul Anthony Martinson, 39, who is accused of assaulting a gay couple in downtown Portalnd last week.

Police are still searching for a second suspect who flashed a knife and helped to damage the gay couples’ SUV. His description: a man in his 20s or 30s, 5-foot-10, 160 pounds and short hair. Anyone with information about the incident should call Detective Paul Dolbey at 503-823-0451.

Portland is not quite as enlightened as it’s often perceived: not even by Portlanders themselves.

Off-duty cops have frequently harassed and beaten gay men in a city park that’s a known cruising spot. Despite having had a liberal police chief–whose out-lesbian daughter was on the force–the PPB’s homophobia continues to be a problem. As are the seemingly annual incidents in which officers continue to thrive in their careers after killing black or mentally-ill citizens (neither dangerous, nor threatening…often, not even suspects).

True Sam Adams who is gay was elected mayor. But he’s not seeking re-election, having encountered reactions ranging from indifference to hostility, primarily.

@Mexico City Pedro: Are you crazy? Beauty is but skin deep, ugly is to the bone. You really can comment that a man who is willing to beat, threaten with a deadly weapon and rob another because the other is gay, that that is somehow “hot”.

I suspect you would not find any hotness is a man who beats you unconscious, kick and stab you into a coma, leave you to die, is “hot” at all. Grow up Pedro, there is NOTHING sexy about homophobe attempted-murderers.

Mexico City Pedro is correct! He is hot, or at least handsome in his appearance anyway and if we only go by that and not how he’s a bigoted towards LGBT people.

From his battle wounds, it appears the gay victim got at least one good punch in.

Mexico City Pedro will wind up in a few suitcases off to the side of a deserted road eventually.

I’d kick his ass, and then make out with him.

So he remembers not being the one who started the fight but he doesn’t remember trashing that guy’s car? How convenient.

Martinson obviously knows who the second suspect is—he’s obstructing justice by not telling the police the guy’s name.

@Eric: He definitely sounded gay in that interview.
