AWARDS SEASON

So The Screen Actors Guild Awards Happened Last Night

As he did at the Golden Globes, Christopher Plummer picked up a Supporting Actor win for playing Beginners‘ just-out octogenarian at the Screen Actors Guild Awards on Sunday, making an Oscar win seemingly more and more a forgone conclusion.

What else was gay about the SAG Awards? Not a whole lot—Modern Family took the Outstanding Cast in a Comedy for the 80th year in a row and gay faves Mary Tyler Moore and Betty White both snagged awards (Moore’s was a lifetime achievement honor.)

Under the umbrella theme of oppressed minorities sticking it to the Man, The Help swept many of the motion picture categories— including Outstanding Performance By Cast.

In general, the SAG Awards are only really noteworthy because they have a habit of predicting who will take honors at the Academy Awards. (Seriously, they air these things on TBS for God’s sake.)

Since SAG is an actors’ union, they only give awards to thespians (and stunt people). So there was no Best Director, Best Costume or Best Song.

Sorry, Madonna, this is one award you will never, ever win.

Ever.
