Remember ABC’s satirical serial from the seventies, Soap?
You know, the show that had Billy Crystal portraying the first prime time gay? Well, we were thinking about that show this morning and all the wacky story lines – from Burt’s imagined invisibility to Jessica’s kidnapping by South American revolutionaries. And, of course, who could forget the possessed baby plot?
They don’t make shit like this anymore, but they should.

If you are to go with the current mantra, Jodie Dallas wasn’t gay, he was transgendered. He spent most of the latter part of the show wanting a sex change. His butch and confused boyfriend was probably the genuine gay boy. So as much as people like to credit Billy Crystal for breaking gay barriers, he was actually breaking transgendered barriers.

jodi was a confused gay man who thought gay men were sissies who really wanted to be girls. (context is important. he grew up in a macho household, remember his father was in construction.)
he was in love with a confused jock who couldn’t acknowledge he was gay even though he was attracted to and in love with jodi. he also felt a need to live a public woman arm the arm life. jodi in his confusion thought he could have all of it if he became a girl. he was blinded by love, although he did look better in his mothers dress than she did, much to her chagrin.
with the bf being the football player it rather broke the stereotype of the sissie as portrayed with jodi. it also shows a man on the down low.
i was in junior high school when this showed first aired and watched it with my family. it was almost my guide to what not to do as a gay.
around the same time period there was an episode of all in the family where archie met an older gay man who used to be a former pro baseball player.
