South Africa Names Leading Homophobe to Uganda Ambassador Post

South Africa’s President Jacob Zuma has gone ahead and appointed Jon Qwelane as the country’s ambassador to Uganda, despite outcries from LGBT activists who point to Qwelane’s horrific positions on equality, and newspaper columns where he writes about “how soon before some idiot demands to ‘marry’ an animal, and that this constitution ‘allows’ it? And by the way, please tell the Human Rights Commission that I totally refuse to withdraw or apologise for my views [because] wrong is wrong.” Of course, it’s really just political favor trading; Qwelane was among Zuma’s most vocal allies during the now-president’s rape trial. Ugandans found out about Qwelane’s appointment only after he “snuck” into Kampala when Zuma visited on state business.
