South Africans Not Thrilled About Lesbian ‘Lesson Teaching’ Rapist’s Possible Release

“Scores of gay and lesbian rights activists are expected to gather at the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday to oppose bail of a Gugulethu man appearing on charges of rape. The 40-year-old was arrested in the early hours of Saturday morning after allegedly raping and beating a lesbian for five hours to ‘teach her a lesson’. The 30-year-old Gugulethu resident was on Sunday traumatised and scared following Friday night’s attack. She was being cared for by Ndumi Funda, the founder of Luleki Sizwe, an organisation formed to support victims of homophobic rapes in townships. Funda said the rape survivor, who had been beaten and strangled with a wire, was unable to speak properly.” [IOL]
