What comes to mind immediately is a song from another great Sondheim show, “Move On.”
I always thought Bobby was gay to begin with. His lack of commitment with women and that conversation with Peter were hints he was just a bit lavender. That being said, they could just have Bobby realize that he’s gay, move on from dating and let the audience see if he fares any better with men. Maybe his commitment issues are more neurotic and are not specific to his gender. Especially since one of the major stereotypes for gay men are there lack of meaningful, serious relationships; doing the gender reversal may just cement that idea for some. While I love Sir Alan, there’s not an ice cube’s chance in Hell that I think his gay male version of “Ladies Who Lunch” will be as good as a woman’s. If Sondheim and the producers/directors want to go in depth of gay male relationships, they should just write a completely new play in lieu of ruining this one! Ugh!
