Surprise Marriages in Ohio & Pennsylvania

Well, it’s looking like a long, hard, grueling fight to win marriage equality in the more conservative states… Or maybe we could just suddenly win marriage overnight, totally by surprise.

Last week a judge in Ohio ruled that the state must recognize a gay couple’s out-of-state license. And a county in Pennsylvania started issuing license of their own.

But the big question is: will it last? The Ohio ruling has an expiration date on August 5, although it could be extended. And the Pennsylvania marriage exist in a legal grey area that everyone’s going to be fighting about for a long time.

The good news is that more and more people are coming around to favor the freedom to marry, and that includes judges, elected officials and bureaucrats. That means that the people who would prevent LGBT couples from marrying are going to have a harder time finding a sympathetic ear in government than ever before.
