Sweden appears ready to cut part of the $50 million in aid it sends Uganda every year over the country’s “appalling” bill that would allow the state to execute queers, which is reportedly “likely” to pass with the support of President Yoweri Museveni. The United States, meanwhile, has no plans to do so.
(An earlier version of this post reported Sweden was going to cut funding. In fact, Gunilla Carlsson the country’s development assistance minister, says it’s only being discussed.)

Uganda was created within its current borders as a British protectorate around the turn of the last century. It is not older than Sweden, or for that matter, the United States, though some of the native kingdoms within its boundaries (such as Buganda)may indeed be several hundred years old.
Nor are the sodomy laws some ancient inheritance – they were introduced by the British, probably based on the 1885 law that was in effect when they took over the area. There’s nothing ancient about any of this.

You all tend to forget something. If you cut aid to Uganda, it’ll only hurt one, and that is the poor people of Uganda, not the government, the parliament or the president. Cutting aid will backfire big time and send many 1000s to the grave. Just think of HIV/Aids care, malaria care (50% of infant deaths are due to malaria alone in Uganda), expensive medicine, community drug distribution programs, food programs, loan programs and any other humanitarian work that is needed for such a country… Saving life is important no matter sexual orientation.

Financial aid generally goes directley towards funding lavish lifestyles for the leaders, their families and their minions. It is usually never funneled down to the starving masses. It is somewhat better when we send actual supplies because at least that can’t be sent to a bank account to serve as a cushion for the leaders to live off. True, there has had been some news pieces about government living off of the aid. Worst case thinking scenario, much like an embryo becoming a factory for cloning Hitlers (or Pol Pot for that matter) – scare tactics I would call it. Set aside the aid, there is no doubt that the government, in one way or another, live off of the aid. If there were no aid, they would have to pay for the whole ordeal them self. Problem is, they won’t. So people will either die in thousands or in many thousands. I wouldn’t like to be the one to choose, like so many of you apparently already have.
However, the financial aid is being monitored – America, like all the other countries, has a monitor plan. It is pretty easy to see if crops are coming up, right?! Organizations are also working with the financial aid, the aid is not only handed over to a particular government, but also distributed among help organizations for aid programs issued by the various aid countries governments. Also another fact, the American aid issued by the, apparently much hated Obama (?!?!), is not funding salaries within the government of Uganda, as far as I know.
(A small note: Your last sentence reminds me of the Pol Pot & the American history…)

If Uganda has failed to respect basic human rights, how can it jump head over heels to talk about morality. Morals are not law. How many laws have been implementably exhausted such that there is now need for new laws to keep people on their toes?
