Puerto Rico's outgoing Governor Anibal Acevedo Vila is playing a bit of political baseball with the incoming Governor by announcing yesterday that he has "prohibited government agencies from discriminating against same-sex couples."
The move allows same-sex partners to apply for health benefits, but the newly elected Governor Luis Fortuño has promised to overturn the move when he takes office in January, claiming that protecting same-sex partners would cost the health care industry too much.
"We are not going to introduce anything that there isn't money to implement," said Fortuño, who also criticized Acevedo for waiting until the end of his term to sign the order.
Acevedo responded ""What I have done is simply broaden these definitions so more people are covered, and it doesn't cost the government of Puerto Rico anything because if the person wants to include somebody they have to pay more."
The order also prevents government agencies from discriminating on the basis of gender identity or sexuality.
The Delhi High Court is considering whether to make gay sex legal in India, the world's second most populous country. This morning, anti-gay rights advocates told the court that legalizing gay sex would increase the spread of HIV & AIDS. Advocate H P Sharma told the court:
"There is an increasing tendency of homosexuals in India to indulge in group sex. What is even more disturbing is that in the name of HIV/AIDS control, they try to get safe places for carrying out perverted sexual practices on a collective scale. Homosexuality will adversely affect the public health and in the name of thrill, enjoyment and fun the young shall walk into the trap of homosexual addiction. The tragic aspect of this is that alcohol, drugs and disease are the natural concomitants of homosexual activity."
The court rejected arguments made last week that gay sex causes bodily harm after gay rights advocates showed the bench World Health Organization documents refuting the claim. The opposition countered that no study had been conducted in India on the matter, but the court replied "Human beings are same everywhere." Gay sex is illegal under Section 377 under the Indian Penal Code and offenders can be sentenced to life imprisonment.
Remember the good old days before political campaigns, collapsing economies and equal rights movements overtook our brains? I mean, things were shitty then, too, but at least we had the good sense to ignore our problems and leave them to future generations, blissfully unaware that we were that "future generation".
Well, it's Friday and we all need a break, so to remind us of live in the good old days, here's a little blind item fun from sister site Mollygood:
Which TV drama series is going to go off the air without wrapping storyline or telling the viewers? The network is pretending that everything is fine. The stars continue to smile, and the network continues to promote the show. However, the schedule has been shuffled and show’s writers have been told to clear out their offices.

Upsetting homosexuals everywhere, Lifetime will not air its first season of Project Runway this fall, but instead move the stolen series to a January debut.
It's a pretty surprising development, given all the hype Harvey Weinstein leveraged as he cajoled the B-list network into paying a higher fee for the franchise.
"A senior teacher at an exclusive $15,000-a-year Sydney school has resigned after students viewed naked pictures of him on a gay dating website… [There] was an explicit personal profile for the teacher, in which he advertised himself as a "40-year-old cuddly bear who is looking for (a) fuck buddy/friend for fun." Carson Kressley's boyfriend of eight months not only broke up with him via email, but then went on Australian radio to discuss the low down. Said George Maloukis:
I sent him an email. I know it’s wrong and I feel really bad.I just came home one day and I sent him an email, not thinking. Then I thought about it and sent him another email the next day saying I was so so sorry. I felt bad the way it was done.
Maloukis also took some time to defend rumors that he's a gold digger. He didn't date Carson for the money. It was the love and attention.
