Why can't McDonald's be straight with the gays?

The American Family Association last week claimed victory in a boycott against McDonald's, which the right-wing organization claimed endorsed same-sex rights because their vice-president of communications, a gay man Richard Ellis, donated to the National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce. McDonald's was also once listed as a sponsor of a NGLCC event.

The queer connections rubbed the AFA the wrong way, of course, but they're now insisting McDonald's crumbled under conservative pressure and has committed to their cause. McDonald's, however, refuses to agree - or disagree - with the AFA's take.

Sure, they may be vehemently homophobic and generally awful, but we have to give the American Family Association credit for their ability to spin bullshit into conservative gold.

The Mississippi-based organization this year launched a campaign against McDonald's after the fast chain sponsored the National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce.

And, as if that's not enough, the company's VP of communications, a gay man named Richard Ellis, sat on the Chamber's board and had donated $200,000 of his own money. The nerve!

Nothing seemed to come of that protest - there was no national outrage, no golden arches fell - yet the AFA asserted today that they've won their hard-fought battle…

» Happy Silence.

Right-wing groups like the Catholic League and the American Family Association, which just launched a Hallmark boycott, have been surprisingly quiet about People magazine's Ellen and Portia gay marriage cover. This brings a smile to journo Jeff Bercovici's otherwise stony face. [Mixed Media]

Oh, lord! The American "Family" Association refuses to give up their "good" fight against McDonald's.

The anti-gay non-profit began ramping up efforts last May, when they blasted the fast food chain's commitment to queer causes, like their sponsorship of pride parades. Not ones to be bullied, McDonald's executives refuses to back down, which has since spurred the AFA to up the ante a bit.

Realizing that their members aren't the most intellectually evolved, the AFA has spelled out their beef with the beloved American restaurant:

What the boycott of McDonald's IS NOT about
• This boycott is not about hiring homosexuals.
• It is not about homosexuals eating at McDonald's.
• It is not about how homosexual employees are treated.

What the boycott of McDonald's IS about
It is about McDonald's, as a corporation, refusing to remain neutral in the culture wars. McDonald's has chosen not to remain neutral but to give the full weight of their corporation to promoting the homosexual agenda, including homosexual marriage.

You know, this could actually be a good thing. Well, for the AFA, at least. Sure, it's socially irresponsible, but think of all the weight they'll lose! Thanks, homosexuals!

Despite the fact that John McCain shouldn't talk about gay marriage - and has repeatedly said the matter should be left to the states - the American Family Association recently implored its members to send the Republican candidate this hysterical message:

Sen. McCain,

I ask that you make passing a federal marriage amendment a top priority in your campaign. The family is the central unit in society. I cannot express to you the importance of this matter.

I will be waiting to see how you respond to this threat to the family.

We wonder why they didn't send this note to the Democrats? They're on the exact same page as McCain when it comes to marriage.

Social conservatives are upping the ante in their war against McDonald's, the restaurant that no doubt raised them.

People like the American Family Association are absolutely seeing red over the fast food chain's National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce.

McDonald's apparently attempted to quell their rage, but only ended up making them more mad, according to an AFA Action Alert…

Social conservatives will shower Sally Kern with praise today, but the anti-gay lawmaker has no friends on The Oklahoman's editorial team.

Kern's main focus in the Legislature has been on anti-gay initiatives, such as trying to determine where libraries should place books with homosexual themes. "God's Word does not change. … Therefore, my opinion also will not change,” she said last week.

Kern will be shown a little love today when the American Family Association holds a rally in her support at the Capitol. Perhaps constituents ought to hold a rally of their own, urging this one-trick pony to put her tiresome personal agenda aside and work to do something constructive.

We have a suggestion, but it's not fit for print.

We really, truly don't understand the American Family Association. And we have a feeling they don't, either!

The AFA's overinflated ego takes another hit this morning. The right wing group took credit for Ford's scaled back gay ad scheme. Ford spokesman Jim Cain further distances his company from the group, saying, "I can tell you there was not a negotiated settlement to [the AFA's] boycott." [Mixed Media]

Politics trumps excellence for the American Family Association. The right wingers are asking concerned parents to keep their kids hope on April 25, the National Day of Silence, which combats homophobia in school. [Joe.My.God]

The American Family Association ain't down with TV Land's colloquial enthusiasm.

The American Family Association takes sexual panic to cinematic heights with their new video, They're Coming To Your Town. Says the right wing non-profit:
Residents of the small Arkansas town of Eureka Springs noticed the homosexual community was growing. But they felt no threat. They went about their business as usual. Then, one day, they woke up to discover that their beloved Eureka Springs, a community which was known far and wide as a center for Christian entertainment–had changed. The City Council had been taken over by a small group of homosexual activists.

The Eureka Springs they knew is gone. It is now a national hub for homosexuals. Eureka Springs is becoming the San Francisco of Arkansas. The story of how this happened is told in the new AFA DVD They’re Coming To Your Town.

And it's a steal for only $14.95 - and your soul!

"Achmed The Terrorist" Plays Trans To Disrupt Colts Game!

Indiana's Bureau of Motor Vehicles recently agreed not to "red-flag" people whose gender doesn't match their driver's license. That's reasonable: why should someone be suspected simply because they're a different gender? Simple, yes? Not to American Family Association of Indiana member Micah Clark.

Through Clark's imbecilic "logic", an innocuous decision to end trans stigmatization becomes a terrorist win. Here's but a small taste:

In a day of rampant identity theft and a war with terrorists, the Indiana BMV believes that not offending a person who is a cross-dresser or someone who has had a sex change overrides any security risk that could happen through a gender and SSI number mismatch.

It gets twice as bad and three times as offensive, after the jump…
