Angels in America

Angels in America scribe Tony Kushner and long-time gay love Mark Harris will soon marry in California. [NY Mag]

Some parents in Illinois are irate that Angels in America has been made required reading. So, they did what any irrational American would do: they protests the "Racist 'Gay' Porn". And they won. [Earned Media via GNW]

Sort Of...

Tom Bush made a name for himself when he fought against using public funding for a production of Angels in America. The 59-year old attorney and President Bush pal spouted the same anti-gay rhetoric we all know and loathe: gays are sinners.

Eleven years down the road and Bush seems to have broadened his homo horizons. A little:

I think that homosexuality is something the government shouldn't promote. On the other hand, it's clear to me that Christ died for everyone. Whether homosexual or heterosexual or a eunuch, you are eligible for entry into heaven by simply believing Christ died for your sins. So we need to be careful who we judge.

Does anyone out there know if Christ accepts bribes? We're a little hesitant to put all our sins on him - we've got loads…

Rep. Brandenburg Fears Where Angels Tread

Who says politicians are the ultimate thespians? Certainly not Michigan State Representative Jack Brandenburg: the politician has launched a war against Saginaw Valley State University over their production of Angels in America. The first battle came in radio form, when Brandenburg appeared on local WJR 760 AM and took on Tony Kushner's Pultizer and Tony award winning AIDS tear jerker.

Upon hearing of the play's production, the rambunctious Republican went to Pam Burns - the head honcho at the Subcommittee on Appropriations for Higher Education. Obviously an appreciator of fine culture - not to mention dire politics - Burns shooed Brandenburg away. Brandenburg may not love the theater, but he sure as hell loves a good fight.

Tony Kushner Chats It Up

We may not be as into theater as some other fags, but we definitely have a thing for Tony Kushner. Who can resist a little Angels in America, right? So, we're thrilled that our friends over at AfterElton sent us this link to their interview with Kushner to discuss the upcoming documentary on him, Wrestling with Angels, as well as his upcoming musical, Caroline, Or Change.

Of course, what's a gay interview today without a little Foley rumination? Not surprisingly, Kushner's got plenty to say about Foley and his wiley ways:

The political scandal du jour, about Florida Republican Rep. Mark Foley, is on Kushner's mind these days. When asked what he thinks about the subject, Kushner responds in a way that many gays have probably felt during this the whole sordid affair: “Oh, great, thanks! It's good for you [Foley] to take this moment to come out of the closet now that you have been revealed as a sexual predator.”

Hey, if you can't come out after being exposed as a sexual predator, when can you come out?

As if that's not enough, Kushner says he's "horrified" by Jim McGreevey. Yeah, we are, too.

Note: If you're a comment reader like us, you'll notice a reader said that Kushner's play, Caroline, or Change closed in 2004. The AfterElton article, we should clarify, discusses the upcoming production at London's National Theatre. So there.

Gay Mormon In Trouble

Buckley Jeppson is Mormon and married. But he’s not married to a woman, but a man–and this has become a big problem with his Church.

If he is excommunicated, Jeppson would make history by becoming the very first Mormon in a legal gay marriage to be figuratively spanked.

If you ask us, that doesn’t sound all that bad. But it sounds like Jeppson wants to stay put.

"I'm not attending in a dress or wearing a boa or anything," Jeppson said. "I show up (to mass) in my suit and white shirt and split after sacrament meeting. I just want to participate and I want to worship quietly in a safe place."

Jeppson isn’t expecting to change an entire Church’s point of view to accept homos for all that they are. Though we wish all religious types could transform from zealots to fag hags like Meryl Streep in Angels in America.
