Sodomy charges hang heavy over Malaysian politico Anwar Ibrahim, the former deputy Prime Minister who hopes to make a comeback in elections this month. Even if he wins, Ibrahim could still face 20-years in prison. Sixty-one percent of voters, however, feel the accusations are political. [Sun Times] |
» Charged.
Things are getting worse for Malaysian opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim. The politico has now officially been charged with sodomy after a former aide accused Ibrahim of making sexual advances. Ibrahim, who has rallied the masses against the ruling government, insists the allegations are all politics. In a surprising move, however, Ibrahim was granted bail, which means he's free to campaign ahead of August 26th elections. [Washington Post] |

Police yesterday arrested him on suspicion of sodomy, a charge put forth by a 23-year old ex-aide, but Ibrahim denies the "defamatory" charges as nothing more than a political conspiracy. The politician, a former deputy prime minister who spent years in jail on corruption charges, claims Malaysia's government wants to stomp him down after his return to the national stage earlier this year. Despite - or in spite - of his claims, masked agents arrested Ibrahim yesterday afternoon: About a dozen policemen, some of them wearing ski masks, cordoned off the road leading to Anwar's house and stopped his car, said his lawyer Sankara Nair. He said Anwar was arrested for suspected sodomy. |

» "Defamation."
Malaysian politician Anwar Ibrahim does not appreciate being called gay. The opposition leader, who fled Malaysia this week over an alleged assassination attempt, filed a defamation lawsuit against a former assistant who accused him of sodomy. Ibrahim faced similar rumors in 1998, when the then-deputy PM was thrown in jail after being accused of sodomy. Those charges were later overturned. Ibrahim's wife called the latest allegations a form of "political murder." [Telegraph] |
