» Not Marketing!

"The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission has ruled Shaw Cable has not been marketing its gay-and-lesbian television service nearly as well as do other cable systems. The broadcast regulators says, as a result of being subjected to 'undue disadvantage,' OUTtv was not getting nearly the audience on Shaw that it was getting elsewhere… No sanctions were announced; Shaw has 30 days to respond to the ruling with proposed fixes." "A Canadian Anglican bishop signaled on Monday he would defy the wishes of the global Anglican church and start drafting a ceremony for blessing homosexual marriages. Bishop Barry Clarke said he would be following through with the wishes of the diocese of Montreal, which he heads, and set up a commission to come up with liturgy for such blessings… The Montreal synod, the diocese's decision-making body, passed a resolution a year ago asking him to grant permission to clergy to bless same-sex marriages and to authorize an appropriate liturgy." "A new study in the Canadian Journal of Economics provides the first evidence on sexual orientation and economic outcomes in Canada. The study found that gay men have 12 percent lower personal incomes and lesbians have 15 percent higher personal incomes than heterosexual men and women… Like previous patterns found in the U.S. and the U.K., results show that gay men have significantly lower personal incomes than similarly situated straight individuals, while lesbians have significantly higher personal incomes than straight women." David Popescu can't keep his mouth shut!

The Canadian political hopeful came under fire last week after suggesting gay people should be executed, a comment that spurred federal investigators to investigate Popescu for inflammatory comments. While most people would have learned their lesson, Popsecu apparently lacks basic social logic:

Toronto police say they're investigating "a threatening occurrence" after comments made by David Popescu to the spokeswoman of a gay rights group on a Toronto radio show on Oct. 2.

Sudbury police are also investigating Popescu for allegedly telling a group of local high school students on Sept. 30 that gays should be executed.

In the Toronto incident, Popescu was asked by radio host John Oakley whether Helen Kennedy, executive director of Egale Canada, should be executed.

Kennedy says Popescu responded "yes."

Popescu cites the Bible as his murderous inspiration…

» Notable Absence.

Canadian politico Tom Lukiwski drew some jeers when he skipped a gay rights forum yesterday. His absence really shouldn't come as a surprise: the Tory has a long history of homophobic attitudes and was once seen on a video talking mad trash about the gays. [CNews]

When should students start learning about human rights? According to some Canadian educators, not until they're in college. Because high schoolers aren't human.

Thus, the Abbotsford School District Board puts the brakes on an elective social studies course because it teaches about homophobia. Those lessons, say some board members, encroach on students' religious beliefs.

While many teachers have expressed their outrage, perhaps British Columbia Federation of Teacher president Irene Lanzinger best describes the idiocy…

"While [Canadian] gay men tend to vote Liberal and lesbians back the New Democratic Party, Canada's homosexual population is united in its opposition to the Conservatives, according to a new report… Given their voting preferences, it is not surprising that gay voters tended to be strongly critical of Stephen Harper, the Prime Minister, and generally supportive of Jack Layton, the leader of the NDP. However, when it came to party support, 35.8% of the gay community as a whole backed the Liberals compared with 33.3% for the NDP." [National Post]

Canadian politician Raymond Gravel buckled under papal pressure this week.

Gravel, a former gay prostitute who became a Catholic priest, ignored the Vatican's urgings ran for public office back in 2006. He pledged not to vote for bills that go against church teachings, but this year came out against a bill pro-choice advocates said could lead to the recriminalization of abortion.

Outraged by Gravel's self-determination, anti-abortion activists complained to the Vatican, which apparently asked Gravel to give up his parliamentary position:

[Gravel] revealed he won't be running in the election expected this fall after a complaint from anti-abortion advocates led the Vatican to force him to choose between politics and the priesthood. Gravel said he has chosen to remain a Catholic priest rather than be defrocked.

Among those who complained to the Vatican was the Campaign Life Coalition, an anti-abortion group which supports Epp's bill.

In its February 2008 newsletter, the group singled out Gravel's comments about Epp's bill as being "the worst" and took exception to Gravel calling them a "fairly extremist and fanatical group."

Gravel insists he doesn't support abortion, but had severe problems with the proposed bill's language and potential side effects.

Canadian wankers will soon see some home grown skin!

The Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications Commission this week approved Alberta-based Real Productions' bid to launch the nation's first digital porn channel.

Real Productions president Shaun Donnelly says the channel, called Northern Peaks, will be patriotic through and though: "I think as Canadians there is a bit of a tiredness in seeing all American stuff. There is always that thrill for something that is local and you get the sense that these are people you can meet at the supermarket." Yeah! Screw American porn! Prove that you don't need a yank to spank, Canada.

Rather than simply featuring the 15% stipulated in the commission's approval, Donnelly's shooting for a fifty/fifty split, thus ensuring Degrassi graduates a film career. A national treasure has been born, we're sure.
