Senator Ted Kennedy dug into Surgeon General Dr. James Holsinger during today's Senate hearing. The senator from Massachusetts eschewed questions on obesity and tobacco, two of Holsinger's medical missions, and instead asked the Kentucky based doctor about that now infamous anti-gay, United Methodist Church-backed paper, "Pathophysiology of Male Homosexuality":

This grave misuse of science gravely concerns me, and I need to hear from Dr. Holsinger himself that he will not similarly misuse his position to push his personal ideological beliefs over scientific research.

Not surprisingly Holsinger denied being a homophobic fundamentalist.

Surgeon General nominee Dr. James Holsinger goes before Senate today, where he'll have to defend himself against some tough questioning, including inquiries into his homo-hating past.

Holsinger helped homophobes when he penned a United Methodist Church-endorsed piece entitled, "Pathophysiology of Male Homosexuality". In that paper, Holsinger dissects gay misdeeds - and their medical discontents.

While ex-gays may love Holsinger, some pretty powerful folk are coming out against him.

Dr. Jocelyn Elders "isn't sure" Congress should approve homo-hating Dr. James Holsinger's nomination as top doc.

The Clinton-era Surgeon General recently sat down with Bible Belt Bloggers' Frank Lockwood to express her sexual insecurity:

Lockwood: Do you think you’d vote to confirm him?

Elders: I think there’s some things he’s said that are out there. It would be very difficult for me to feel that this is the person that we should be confirming in this day and time with all the problem we have, related to sexual heath and all the problems we’re getting into. I think as the nation’s chief health educator we need to know what he would do to help America evolve into a sexually healthy nation. We’re a sexually unhealthy nation.

She then went on to suggest a national circle jerk, claiming the massive amounts of semen would wash Washington clean.

Stephen Colbert employed his patented dead-pan Friday to take on the Bush Administration and the president's surgeon general nominee.

I'm disappointed by how little progress we've made on the gay marriage issue. The gays continue to threaten my happy marriage by threatening to have their own happy marriages.

Colbert goes on to take the piss out of surgeon general nominee Dr. James Holsinger and his famously fanatical paper, "Pathophysiology of Male Homosexuality":

…In [the paper], Dr. Holsinger proves that male homosexuality is not only unnatural but a threat to public health… I say we get this guy appointed and let him do for homosexuality what previous surgeon generals have done for smoking. For years, we have tolerated smoking, just like we currently tolerate homosexuality, but the surgeon general alerted us to the dangers of smoking with warning labels. With Holsinger at the helm, we can use the same approach for homosexuality. Every gay man and woman should come with a label.

That'd certainly make our lives easier.

Mainstream media's finally picking up on what we already knew: Surgeon General nominee Dr. James Holsinger's a homo-hater. As we've reported, Holsinger advocates so-called ex-gay therapy.

Not only does Holsinger work for the United Methodist Church, he founded the Hope Springs Church, which holds the traditional family in high regard. Above you'll see CNN's coverage of Holsinger's queer nomination, including a few words from The Gay and Lesbian Task Force's leader, Matt Foreman. You'll also hear the White House's statement on the matter:

On numerous occasions, [Holsinger] has taken up the banner for underprivileged populations and he will continue to be a strong advocate for these groups and all Americans.

The White House, of course, has never quite understood the meaning of "underprivileged" or, really, "American".

Pathophysiology of Male Homosexuality

The stink surrounding Surgeon General nominee, Dr. James Holsinger just keeps growing. Human Rights Campaign unearthed a 1991 document Holsinger wrote for the United Methodist Church. The paper, entitled "Pathophysiology of Male Homosexuality" explains that God created men and women to complement one another. When this plan's not honored, well, bad things happen:

..The logical complementarity of the human sexes has been so recognized in our culture that it has entered our vocabulary in the form of naming various pipe fittings either the male fitting or the female fitting depending upon which one interlocks within the other. When the complementarity of the sexes is breached, injuries and diseases may occur as noted above.

The diseases noted include lacerations, perforations and death. Lacerations? What the fuck does he think gays do in bed?

Dr Joel Ginsberg, who heads the San Francisco-baed Gay and Lesbian Medical Association, remarks: "He's pathologizing homosexual practices to make a point. And we think that's inappropriate scientifically."

Um, what about morally?
