"Law enforcement agencies reported a slight decrease in hate crimes last year, despite an increase against gays and lesbians. The FBI reported more than 7,600 hate crime incidents in 2007, down about 1 percent from last year. Racially motivated hate crimes accounted for more than half of that total. Religious bias was the second-leading motive for hate crimes, followed by prejudice against sexual orientation. Within those categories, the FBI report found most hate crimes tended to be anti-black, anti-Jewish and anti-gay. The FBI report is purely statistical and does not assign a cause for the slight overall decrease or the 6 percent increase in anti-gay hate crimes." [AP] |

Law's Amendments Will Require Registration, User Log
Passed in 1988, Section 2257 works to combat child pornographers, but a series of amendments have expanded the law's net, especially on the net. Though regulations are meant to hinder porn peddlers, they can also be expanded to social sties. Private citizens who submit naughty pictures must register and provide a photo id. These logs can then be reviewed by the Attorney General and the FBI, says The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force. Those of you interested in fighting this invasion of privacy better hurry up - the public has until September 10th to file a complaint. The Task Force provides all the relevant information. |

Unknown Techie Takes On Wikipedia
An intrepid Canada journo, David George-Cosh did a little digging into Wikipedia and found a worrisome link between the Canadian government and homophobic revision: One user, with an IP address that points to a government office in Ottawa, removed Wikipedia's entire entry on homosexuality several times on July 20, 2005, and replaced it with such sentences as: "Homosexuality is evil," "Homosexuality is wrong according to the Bible" and "Homosexuals need our help and counselling." The IP address responsible for that edit continued to deface the entry on homosexuality a total of 24 times between July, 2005, and July, 2006… Good to know Canada's civil servants spend their time wisely. In other shady government moves, the CIA and FBI apparently edited Guantanamo and Iraq war entries. Because any amount of control counts… |
