It's Hard Out There...

Now that Next EIC Justin Ocean's jumping ship to head The Out Traveler, the weekly fag rag's looking for a new leader.

The New York-based magazine's publishers recently put an ad on Media Bistro and the job description includes this queer stipulation: "Must have ability to juggle extreme personalities of nightlife scene and advertisers."

"Extreme personalities" must be the polite way of saying, "Self-important, possibly drugged up diva fags from hell."

Editor Has No Idea Who's Next At 'Next'

Justin Ocean knows us so well!

Last year we blew up the homo-journo's spot when he took over as editor of weekly fag rag Next. He and his staffers retaliated by circulating an uproarious press release. Well, to avoid any such scandals this year, Ocean confirmed rumors that he has been tapped to take over The Out Traveler:

Yes, official as of today, in mid January I'm leaving Next to take over the editor position at The Out Traveler. No drama or anything behind the decision; just a great opportunity that I couldn't pass up. I've freelanced for The Out Traveler and Gay.com/Planetout.com for the past few years so it's always been a direction I was interested in moving, even though I wasn't actively seeking a new job.

Despite its share of hefty moments, Next has been a ton of fun and an amazing, fulfilling place to work and really flex some creativity. I think over the past year my co-workers and pack of contributors and I have really upped the ante of what a fag rag can be, and I expect that whoever takes my place is going to continue that growth. Who that is… Don't know yet! The publisher and I are talking about candidates and looking around. Applications are being accepted.

Current print editor Matt Link apparently wants to spend more time on book projects or something…

Congratulations, Ocean! We know you've been around the block a few times, so we're sure your extensive experience will come in handy!

We live in a new era, readers. The once-ubiquitous inquiry "But is it art" has been replaced by "But is it homophobic?"

Finds Old, Tired Circuit Queens

Nightlife's not dying. It's just taking a new form. That's Out magazine's thesis for their October issue.

As part of their coverage, the monthly probes actor John Barrowman's kink filled imagination:

I have a fetish for leather that I've never lived out. I would like to be blindfolded and guided in a room, with everyone else in chaps, in harnesses and slings, and just – […] I'm a control freak. So I'd be taken out of my control zone.

While that's all well and good, we're much more interested in another one of their investigations: the waning, aging state of the circuit party. And the young bucks who are taking its place…

While some fag rag's celebrate pride with a party guide, booze cruise or advice on how to neatly fit that rainbow flag up your ass, New York's Next's looking to change the game a bit. Or, rather, a lot.
