Just days after a 22 year-old Syracuse woman was murdered because she was gay, former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee asserted on The View today that gay civil rights should not be taken seriously because "[b]lacks were stoned, hung, and dragged for their constitutional right to ’sit at the table.’ Whites — gay or not — already had a seat at that table.” Where to begin? A police report out today says 22 year-old Moses "Teish" Cannon was shot outside a party in Syracuse, NY last Friday because she was a lesbian. |

We've already discussed their perspective, but it's worth readdressing for some of the rhetoric coming out of St. Paul right now. Unlike previous conventions, the Republicans this year steered clear of sexual politics. Though their platform still makes a point of excluding the gays, marriage and the evils of same-sex loving are no longer central to the party's public image. The Advocate's Sean Kennedy notes: Except for a remark by McCain's former rival Mike Huckabee about not changing "the very definition of marriage from what it has always meant throughout recorded human history," there was an utter lack of rhetoric on gay issues — contrary to the strong statements of support heard at the Democratic convention in Denver last week. Gay voters were positively thrilled to hear so much pro-gay speak from the Democrats. Queer Republicans, meanwhile, are thrilled not to have been mentioned. |

While many people think the duo would do well together, with Mormon Mitt balancing McCain's alleged liberal leanings, thus wooing worried social conservatives, evangelical voters aren't having it. And now they're telling McCain to look elsewhere… |

Running for President was the single best thing former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee ever could have done: "Less than one month after signing on as a Fox News commentator, Mike Huckabee is working aggressively to expand his media presence. This week, Huckabee is meeting with Fox officials about plans to host his own show on the network. Plus, he’s subbing for Paul Harvey on ABC Radio Network and appearing on a number of existing Fox shows." [Politico] |

Failed Republican presidential nominee Mike Huckabee had this to say to his party peers: "Republicans will make a fundamental if not fatal mistake if they seek to win the election by demonizing Barack Obama." [CNN] |

Killings of this nature are far more significant than a murder - the crime becomes a statement. Specific assassinations certainly exist in their respective context - Martin Luther King and Franz Ferdinand's shootings took place within widely varied cultural climates, and with arguably different results - but mere mention of the fearsome verb can resonate far and wide. That's no more true than during the current primary here in the United States, where we seem to have a morbid love affair with assassinations and the myths they birth. |
» Apologetic Mike
Republican Mike Huckabee has now twice apologized for his misplaced Barack Obama assassination joke. The former presidential contender's second lament came on yesterday's Meet The Press: "It was a dumb, off-the-cuff remark… And, you know, it wasn't the first dumb thing I've ever said and — let me go ahead and announce on this program — it won't be the last dumb thing I've ever said. … This wasn't funny, I'll be the first to tell you that. Shouldn't have said it. I apologize. I don't know what else I can do." [LA Times] |

Not even the National Rifle Association could muster up a giggle when Republican Mike Huckabee cracked a joke about someone taking a shot at Barack Obama, a man who has received death threats. Better luck next time, Huck! The remark comes at about the one minute mark. Feel free to fast forward. |
» Huckabee Aborts
That's a wrap, folks! Political preacher man Mike Huckabee dropped out of the presidential race tonight following John McCain's four primary win. We almost feel bad for Huckabee, but we've got a feeing the former Governor will make a return… [MSNBC and NY Times] |

Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton made an appearance on Saturday Night Live this weekend. In addition to an awkward match-up with comedic clone Amy Poehler, Mrs. Clinton took a jab at the show's alleged Obama love. The Democrat also put in a sly, tongue-in-cheek shout-out to Texas, Ohio, Rhode Island and other states with primaries in the near future. Clinton did alright, we think, but definitely didn't do as well as Mike Huckabee, who appeared last week. We may think Huckabee's a total nut, but he's got comedic timing. Hillary, however, does not. Doomed presidential candidate Mike Huckabee recently sat down with model Tyra Banks. And, as you know, Banks felt obligated to bring up the gays, who all love her, and asked the Republican why he's such a hater. Huckabee insists he's not a homophobe, of course, he just doesn't find our queer "lifestyle" normal. |
» Huck Needs A Hit
New Tyra BFF Mike Huckabee yearns for some journalistic abuse. The should-be former presidential candidate told reporters yesterday that he's a bit jealous of that NY Times' McCain Lobbyist story: "…If anything it's helped John McCain and I'm kind of hoping the New York Times will take me on and run a nasty front page story — may be the best thing that could happen to me, certainly was to him." We can't watch the exchange until this Friday, but a very helpful Banks staffer sent over the transcript of Banks and the Huckster talking about the gays. Because, as Tyra declares, "I love the gays and the gays love me. And I know I cannot walk down the street here in New York City if I didn't press that issue and truly ask you that." Girl, you know it's true. So, what does Huckabee have to say for himself? Nothing new, really, except his language seems to be softer. We aren't the necrophiliacs we once were; we're just missing the mark:
Well, good. We're glad you "respect" that we don't think gay folk are freaks. That's very kind of you, Schmuckabee. Read the rest of the ladies' exchange, after the jump: |
» Big Weekend For Obama
Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama swept all five Democratic contests this weekend, taking Maine, Louisiana, the Virgin Islands, Nebraska and Washington. Competitor Hillary Clinton has turned her focus to Texas and Ohio, which hold their primary season events next month on March 4th. Meanwhile, on the Republican side, Mike Huckabee took Kansas, Washington state and Louisiana. John McCain still leads nationally, however. [Globe & Mail] |
