It's official!

Barack Obama announced last night that he's picked Delaware Senator Joe Biden as his running mate. Biden, who previously attempted to throw the press off track, brings 35 of Senatorial experience to Obama's ticket. And, thanks to his seat on the Foreign Relations Committee, first hand international policy knowledge, which will help even Obama's odds against John McCain.

The California Supreme Court's historic ruling on gay marriage has already turned into the hottest news item. And, natural, the reactions are coming in. Republican Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger kept his promise and vowed to let by-gones be gay bygones: "I respect the Court’s decision and as Governor, I will uphold its ruling. Also, as I have said in the past, I will not support an amendment to the constitution that would overturn this state Supreme Court ruling.”

PFLAG's proud as pie, of course, but mama Molleen Matsumura had an especially touching - and press friendly! - response, “California has embraced our children and affirmed our families… My husband and I are proud to now live in a state where our daughter’s union will be equal to our own." So cute!

But, there are some people raining on the parade, so to speak…

Washington State came one step closer to equality yesterday.

Governor Chris Gregoire signed the recently expanded domestic partnership bill into law. Said Gregoire: "This bill is about protecting and helping Washington families. It simply gives these families the same rights as everybody else. It's the right thing to do." Well, that's not entirely true. Sure, the new DP's give gays 170 new rights, but come nowhere near marriage.

The bill's sponsor, Representative Jamie Pedersen realizes there's still more ground to cover: Domestic partners still lack the vast majority of the protections that married couples take for granted in Washington state. This law, Pedersen says, is the "next step in addressing that injustice."
