As Ellen and Portia walk down the aisle and Neil Patrick Harris escorts his boyfriend to red carpet events, it would seem that being gay in Hollywood has become quite common. And, more importantly, acceptable.

While that's certainly true in a relative sense - can you imagine Rock Hudson doing the same? - the NY Times ran an article this weekend on the challenges facing out actors in Tinseltown.

…For most gay actors, Hollywood is not a warm and fuzzy episode of “Will & Grace.” Today, it is certainly more acceptable to be openly gay. But these actors must still answer wrenching questions: Just how candid do you want to be? Would you be happy appearing only in comedies, or being pigeonholed as a character actor? And what does the line “You’re just not right for the role” really mean?

Openly gay can still mean they would rather not talk about it. Most gay actors are mum in public or on the set, even if they don’t hide their orientation in private, actors and others in the entertainment industry said. Although most may no longer participate in charades — the “girlfriend” on the red carpet, for instance — many adopt a don’t ask, don’t tell policy.

Why? For both men and women, being openly gay, at least for now, means giving up any hope of superstardom.

That's not true for Ellen, sure, but that doesn't mean she's using her celebrity to help the homos. This picture, taken on Sunday, comes from a "Yes on Prop. 2" event that Ellen and Portia hosted. Proposition 2 is for the rights of farm animals. Though she's spoken out against Proposition 8, which would overturn gay marriage, Ellen has yet to donate or raise money for the cause.

Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi were recently wed in a very well-publicized ceremony in Beverly Hills. After that, DeGeneres took to her blog to decry California's Proposition 8, the constitutional amendment that would eliminate same sex couples' right to marry.

Yet despite all the good she's done for gay rights in California, there's a rumbling from other Proposition 8 opponents who say DeGeneres needs to contribute more.

Ellen DeGeneres is just so generous! The lesbian funny lady used her talk show yesterday to run some behind-the-scenes footage of her wedding to Portia de Rossi.

It's possibly the cutest thing we've ever seen and these girls are by far our favorite gay couple in history.

Donna Summer's "Bad Girl "always makes us think of Portia de Rossi. Not because de Rossi's a prostitute, but because of her wet t-shirt cage dance on Arrested Development*. Ellen, you're a lucky girl.

*If anyone can find a clip of that scene, we'd be forever grateful.

» Happy Silence.

Right-wing groups like the Catholic League and the American Family Association, which just launched a Hallmark boycott, have been surprisingly quiet about People magazine's Ellen and Portia gay marriage cover. This brings a smile to journo Jeff Bercovici's otherwise stony face. [Mixed Media]

Tila Tequila, the reality slut star who took credit for California's gay marriage win, has wise words about Ellen and Portia's weekend wedding: "I thought it was awesome. I was really excited when I heard about it, and the fact that they are openly out there." Tequila, who's dating LA-based lesbian Courtenay Semel, also celebrated the beauty of lesbianism: "With another girl, you never have to worry about how you look in the morning because we both look shitty, and it's fine." Mazel Tov to Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi!

The lovely lesbians made honest women of one another when they tied the knot at their Beverly Hills Mansion Saturday:

De Rossi, 35, wore a backless, light pink dress, and her hair in a loose updo. DeGeneres, 50, dressed in pants, button-up shirt and vest — all in white. [Both by Zac Posen.]

Before the intimate ceremony attended by about 20 guests, "Ellen and Portia came out and posed for pictures with Ellen's mom and their two dogs," a witness tells Usmagazine.com.

"They were hugging and kissing, and looked ecstatic," the onlooker adds. "Ellen was helping Portia with the train of her dress, which looked like a Cinderella tutu."

The pair, who "were both laughing," walked "all over the lawn together holding hands and posing," the witness tells Us. "The whole afternoon seemed light-hearted."

No word on where the ladies will be taking their honeymoon, but we suggest the Greek Isles…

The time has come! Ellen DeGeneres and lady love Portia de Rossi will reportedly tie the knot this weekend:

[The women] will wed this weekend in California, Usmagazine.com has learned exclusively.

The pair are planning a small, intimate ceremony with only a few close friends and family.

Of the preparations, DeGeneres joked, "Planning a wedding is very stressful. It's crazy. My gardener is now invited."

DeGeneres and de Rossi began dating in December 2004.

"I feel like I found my perfect fit," DeGeneres said of de Rossi in an interview with the Advocate.

Not to mention a fine female specimen. That Portia be hot!

Things are looking pretty peachy for Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi.

First and foremost, DeGeneres won her fourth Daytime Emmy this weekend for "best talk show host," because people just love a lesbian chatter box. While Portia didn't take home a trophy, the absolutely gorgeous actress did have a bobble of her own: a pink diamond engagement ring for the gals' forthcoming gay marriage, according to People:

[DeGeneres] gave Portia de Rossi a glittering ring with pink diamonds for their upcoming wedding that will air in part on DeGeneres's talk show.

"Yes, we have set a wedding date," said DeGeneres, who walked the red carpet with de Rossi at

De Rossi wore a green satin Lanvin gown and a Neil Lane ring on her wedding finger. The ring was a marquis cut diamond set with pink diamonds.

Gawd! Being a lesbian sounds so glamorous! (Except for the vaginal bit…)

But That Doesn't Mean You Won't See Them!

Ellen DeGeneres does some things conventionally (launch a mega-hit daytime talk show) and some things unconventionally (announce she’s gay on her own sitcom).

And, thanks to California’s OK-ing of gay marriage, she’s about to do something else quite conventional: get married to partner Portia de Rossi.

But here’s the unconventional part: she won’t be selling the pics…

Yesterday was quite the day!

As part of the gay marriage celebration, Ellen DeGeneres announced that she and her lovely lady, fellow entertainer Portia de Rossi will marry. Said the lesbian funny lady:

This is very exciting, I have to say. Yesterday, the California Supreme Court overturned the ban on gay marriage. So I would like to say right now, for the first time, I am announcing that I am getting married. […]

I’m so excited. It’s something that we’ve, of course, wanted to do, and we’ve wanted to be legal, and we’re very very excited.

Congratulations to Ellen and Portia! You ladies are now definitely our favorite lesbian couple, so we hope to receive an invitation. Hint, hint…

And here's the video of Ellen announcing it on her show, below.
