Rene Portland

Penn's State female basketball player has a problem with her female players. She thinks they're too butch. Hard to believe but Coach Rene Portland doesn't want lesbians playing on her team.

Former player Jennifer Harris (who isn't even a dyke) delivers a boatload of legal papers just in time for Christmas:

Harris, who is black, said in the filing that Portland repeatedly asked her to change her appearance to look more "feminine."

"In pursuing her discriminatory policy — known as 'no drinking, no drugs, no lesbians' — Ms. Portland has particularly targeted players who are African-American," Harris' attorneys wrote in the lawsuit.

According to her way of thinking, not only does playing women's basketball make you a dyke, these days, but so does being African-American! We had no idea! We can all thank Sheryl Swoopes for that one.

What were some of the biggest headlines and news stories about the gay community this year? There were many important happenings this year. Here are our top So Gay! picks.

5. Hangings In Iran. It’s tough enough being openly gay in this world. But we can’t even begin to imagine living in a country where people are publicly executed for being gay. Absolutely revolting.

4. Sheryl Swoopes’ Coming Out. The bitch was so cool this year that she made not one but two of our So Gay! lists. No one in pro sports as popular as the WNBA’s Swoops has had the courage to come out of the closet while still an active player. We hope this is the start of a long overdue trend.

3. Schwarzenegger Same-Sex Marriage Bill Veto. Oh that Arnie. As seen as he found out about it, the former homo boy toy announced he would veto the bill that would have legalized gay marriage in California, the country’s most populated state. His follow through instantly disappointed committed queers in GLBT meccas San Francisco, Palm Springs, and LA. Guess who is up for re-election next year?

2. Vatican Ban On Gays. Though employing God only knows how many gays, the Catholic Church this year decided it wanted them banned from the Priesthood. The directive came out under newbie Pope Benedict. Why the need for the document? Because only gays abuse little boys, silly! Get rid of them and bammo! Problem solved. Well, not really.

It is time for another So Gay! list and having yesterday listed the year’s villains, today we’re listing those worthy of respect and praise: 2005’s biggest coming out stories.

5. George Takei. Actor George Takei, best known as Mr. Sulu from Star Trek, surprised Trekkies around the world when he declared his homosexuality and spoke of his sibling’s lack of compassion. However, he did not comment on the Richard Gere/Tribble rumor.

4. Logo. MTV Networks launched their little gay channel that could this summer with a great mix of original programming and news. And the network’s commitment to blogs (we’ve been featured) makes us happy it came out this year even more.

3. Tab Hunter. The one time sex symbol and Hollywood star wrote a book, Tab Hunter Confidential: The Making of a Movie Star, and in doing so came out of the closet. At 74, we’d just wish he’d done it sooner. But we totally think it’s never too late for the truth.

2. Sheryl Swoopes. Sheryl Swoopes is the bomb. She is a sport’s hero, a strong woman, and now an out and proud carpet muncher. In a field where gays are not supposed to show their faces, Ms. Swoopes did just that. We got mad love for you, baby.

The top coming out story of 2005 after the jump.

Oprah's style bitch Nate Berkus has finally published his own design book. Lucky for us, he's in almost every picture.

Sheryl Swoopes adorns the cover of the new Advocate demonstrating that holding large balls still puts a smile on her face.

• A UK register's office is replacing pictures of "Romeo and Juliet on a Swing" with gaudy landscape paintings so as to not offend gay couples. Guess they're totally fine with offending our sensibilties.

Madge says she first fell for her husband when she saw him with his shirt off. That settles it. She's definately a "gay man in a woman's body."

Margaret Cho's Bam Bam and Celeste will close Outfest's Fusion film festival. We have high hopes for what could be the best fag/fag hag road trip movie ever.

This is proving to be an absolutely fabulous week for celebrities coming out of the damn closet. First we had Sheryl Swoopes, a forward for the Houston Comets basketball team, publicly announcing that she only wants to get slam dunked by another woman. Her coming out was facilitated by a six figure endorsement deal with Olivia lesbian cruises.

Gay George

Now, actor George Takei will be bringing declosetration to the world of science fiction. Famous for playing Mr. Sulu on Star Trek, Takei penned an autobiography To The Stars. Commenting on Amazon’s web site, one reader noted that in the book, Takei made no mention whatsoever of his love life. Wasn’t that reader perspicacious?

Still, as a victim of anti-Japanese prejudice in the United States during the Second World War, Takei has in the past shown himself capable of raising his voice in defense of oppressed minorities. Queerty hopes he will do so in defense of that delightful alphabet soup we call LGBT. If he doesn’t, may a pigeon leave a dropping in his hand print in cement at the Chinese Theater.

• Basketball star Sheryl Swoopes, a three-time Olympic gold medalist and three-time MVP of the WNBA is a lesbian reports Outsports.com. Big shock.

• Karen isn’t going anywhere, honey. Megan Mullally’s talk show has been picked up for next year.

EBTG’s Ben Watt is set to spin at Cielo in NYC tomorrow night. It will feel like 1999 all over again.

• While reading about Ms. Swoopes our eyes wondered to the Outsport.com photo galleries. OH MY GOD.

• Gay.com has the dos and don'ts of online hooking up on their site. Things we learned by experience.
