"While [Canadian] gay men tend to vote Liberal and lesbians back the New Democratic Party, Canada's homosexual population is united in its opposition to the Conservatives, according to a new report… Given their voting preferences, it is not surprising that gay voters tended to be strongly critical of Stephen Harper, the Prime Minister, and generally supportive of Jack Layton, the leader of the NDP. However, when it came to party support, 35.8% of the gay community as a whole backed the Liberals compared with 33.3% for the NDP." [National Post]

Gay Canadian Senator Nancy Ruth does not accept Conservative MP Tom Lukiwski's apology for his anti-gay comments back in the 90s. Said Ruth: "Apologies are never enough. There always needs to be action." Not according to PM Stephen Harper. [Niagara Falls Review]

Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper knows how to play pussy and politics. While he chides anti-gay MP Tom Lukiwski for his anti-gay comments, Harper's quick to tell the press - and the public - to accept his party peer's apology:

Harper said a Conservative MP has apologized for "completely unacceptable" anti-gay comments he made almost two decades ago and will not be disciplined.

In the House of Commons on Monday, Harper said the MP has given an "unqualified" apology and demonstrated remorse for his comment.

"I believe that when such apology and remorse is sought from an individual member, the generous and high-minded thing to do is to accept that apology," Harper said in response to NDP and Liberal calls for Lukiwski's dismissal as parliamentary secretary to the government house leader.

Actually, we agree. Lukiwski's uttered comments - which nonsensically describes his opposition as dirty faggots, who apparently have dirty fingernails - over a decade ago and while under the influence. We once thought we liked girls, so people obviously can change and we're willing to believe Lukiwski's sorry - he got caught…

We’ve been remiss in not addressing the disturbing news from our neighbors up north. Canada has just elected its own George W. Bush and things don’t look so good for The Gays. Our reader Andrew sent this to us earlier this week.

Thought you might be interested in the sad turn of events in last night's Canadian election: the Conservatives (Canadian equivalent to the American Republicans) won a minority government. As a queer Canadian, this worries me a great deal. Stephen Harper, our Prime Minister elect, plans on repealing the marriage act so as to not include same-sex couples in the act, and instead only granting separate civil unions for same sex couples. As you can imagine, same sex marriage is something that many Canadians worked very hard to achieve. I simply cannot believe that we will be turning back time not to mention Stephen Harper turning his back on the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, in order to exclude same sex couples from the institution of marriage.

Enough with my monologue. I just thought that you, or your readers might be interested in the sad, and what seems to me to be a step backward for Canada, and lefties in North-America — although I'm certain that Dubya will be pleased.

We found an article that appears to show Mr. Harper has more in common with Spongebob Squarepants, than he does with Dubya. Except Spongebob is way cuter.
