You know that guy you run into at bars that turns every question to sex? You're just trying to have a drink and momentarily forget that your sub prime mortgage is about to turn you into a hobo and this guy just keeps asking about your penis size. Well, The Advocate's Brandon Voss is that guy and he lets loose on actor Adrien Brody in the magazine's latest installment of "Big Gay Following" or as we like to call it, "The Last Gay Media Interview This Person Will Ever Do." Here's the business:

In case you didn't see in the comments, the company's decided to spread the vagabond wealth. First, there will be some sort of new and expanded website to take the supplement's place, and then journos are going to add an improved travel section to The Advocate, which will soon be relaunching. There aren't going to be any "big shakeups," according to our insider, but that's what they always say. We'll let you know if more information trickles down. |

» FYI…
From a press release: "The Advocate, the world’s leading LGBT news source, is pleased to announce that Matthew Breen has been named Executive Editor of the publication. Breen, who most recently served as the Executive Editor of Out magazine, will be based in The Advocate’s Los Angeles offices and will report directly to The Advocate Editor in Chief, Jon Barrett." |

The movie's story should be a familiar one: Harvey Milk was California's first openly gay elected official and was later assassinated, along with San Francisco Mayor George Moscone. Franco's starring opposite Sean Penn, who has not been doing press for the movie, which is a bit queer. So, Franco's getting all this attention and people are loving him. Or hating him. It depends on who you ask. |

In addition to highlighting her husband's support for the Ryan White Act and fighting the Federal Marriage Amendment, Mrs. Obama reiterates a message familiar to voters, especially gay Democrats: we shouldn't accept the world as it is, but we should work toward the world as it should be - a cornerstone quote in many of her stump speeches. And, in fact, that idea's the title for her essay - "The World As It Should Be." Obama concludes the piece by asking concerned citizens to join the fight and work the streets for Obama's campaign. I know we can do this. But we can’t do it alone. We have only a matter of days until voter registration deadlines pass in many states. We need our supporters to become active volunteers. Go door to door. Work the phones. Drive to battleground states. Help us get out the vote. Sheesh! Who knew democracy was so needy!? |
» Voss Out!
Homo-journo Brandon Voss finally gave his notice and will later this month leave his position as fag rag HX's editor-in-chief. We hear Voss, who has been at the magazine since 2004 and editing it since 2006, plans on spending more time freelancing for The Advocate and working on a novel, which we're sure will change the face of American literature. No one's officially been appointed HX's new editor, the rhetorical finger's pointing at associate editor John Russell. |
» Hear Ye, Hear Ye!
Okay, we thought it was already official, but apparently now it's double official, because Regent Media sent out a press release today annoucing the finalization of its Out, The Advocate and generally all of gay media buy. [Jossip] |

» Problematizing…
"…Therein lies the problem of publishing both Out and The Advocate: While Aaron Hicklin has overseen a resurgence with Out — it's thicker, better designed, and more readable than ever — he's also cut out the gay lifestyle market from its own sister pub, The Advocate. And while The Advocate was never supposed to be about lifestyle — it's a news rag — it doesn't have much of a chance to evolve given that Out has snagged the logical "next step" territory." » Cycle.
Gay news magazine The Advocate will evolve to the internet-based world and go monthly for the new year. Said EIC Jon Barrett: "I don't think there is a need for a biweekly magazine anymore with the Web. We will have more room for bigger stories and we're going to get better writers." The staff must be thrilled. [BAR via Towleroad] |

And, also, homo-journo Sean Kennedy's coming of gray age: I first spotted the gray a couple of months before my 30th birthday–three or four strands glistening on my left temple. I leaned into the mirror for a closer look and confirmed my worst nightmare: I was officially old. Sure, there were only a few hairs now, but it was only a matter of time — months, maybe a year? — before I’d be totally gray and my youth would be lost forever. Oh, Kennedy! We know you - you'll be young forever. In spirit, at least. [via Soup Cans] |

After 15-years as editor, Anne Stockwell has "stepped down," thus making room for new EIC Jon Barrett, who will apparently be leading the long-running pub in a "new direction." And here! networks, which bought the PlanetOut periodicals earlier this year, couldn't be more excited about the regime change. Said honchos Stephen P. Jarchow and Paul Colichman: We are thrilled that Jon Barrett will bring his talent to this important brand and continue the historic tradition of The Advocate. Barrett will provide the magazine with a provocative new perspective around the critical issues affecting the lives of the LGBT community as well as expand Advocate.com into a definitive, daily online news source. Like Stockwell, Barrett's an industry veteran and previously worked as senior editor at Real Simple, O at Home and Cargo. Full release, after the jump… |

» Redundant?
The gay watchdogs over at GLAAD gave gay news rag The Advocate a media award for "Best Overall Coverage," thus dashing the hopes of Entertainment Weekly, Newsweek and other mainstream magazines. Now, no disrespect to The Advocate, but they should inherently have great gay coverage, which translates to an advantage. This is like giving the Pope an award for "most prayerful," or something. Regardless, congratulations! [Gay.com] |

» Run-Down
The Advocate's Thomas Roberts piece inspired a list of the out, not-so-out and even more not-so-out homo-journos. Hey, ABC's Jeffrey Kofmann, call us! [The Sword] |
» Decisions, Decisions…
The kids at The Advocate sent us over their article on Kim Cattrall, whose Sex and The City movie soon debuts. While Cattrall's all well and good, the depth of the piece is - well, minimal. That's why we suggest you read what Martha Plimpton had to say to journo Brandon Voss. She's always been one of our favorites and has loads to say about playing gay and just being generally fabulous. |
» Queer Analysis.
Sappho-journo Kerry Eleveld takes a hard look at Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton's campaigns to analyze their approaches to gay politics. And, yes, Eleveld - who has interviewed Obama - discusses criticism that Obama hasn't done enough gay press: "…Personally, I’m less concerned about whether Senator Obama is talking to local or national gay outlets than the frequency with which he is talking to us."
