Silverton, Oregon made a bit of history this week by electing the nation's first trans mayor, Stu Rasmussen. Says Rasmussen of his queer ways: "I identify mostly as a heterosexual male," Rasmussen said. "But I just like to look like a female. Some guys' mid-life crisis is motorcycles or sports cars or climbing mountains or trophy wives or whatever. I always wanted cleavage, so I went out and acquired some." Again, awesome. [KGW]

Trans folk faced a unique problem at polling places yesterday: registries often don't include their new names, which can stonewall their democratic efforts. [NY Times]

British gay group Stonewall may have egg on its face this Thursday when trans activists protest the organization's eponymous awards at the V&A Museum.

Activists are annoyed over the group's nomination of lesbian journalist Julie Bindel, who, in 2004, wrote an article in which she pitted her feminism against trans rights.

"Bangalore police have been accused of arresting and mistreating more than 40 people at a peaceful demonstration. The conflict reportedly flared when five hijras (working-class, male-to-female, transgender people) were arrested by police on October 20th in what the local Daily News and Analysis called a 'drive against the city’s eunuch menace.'" Dr. Phil today spent his talk show discussing "gender confused children," the dangers of early hormone therapy, chatted with parents of trans children and debated Focus on the Family's right-wing perspective. Obviously these are controversial topics and you can be sure Phil's message boards are positively burning up right now. But one comment more than any other has been fueling the debate:

As a Christian, I KNOW that people are NOT born gay. God created man and woman to procreate and there is no way two women or two men can naturally procreate together. God loves all of His creation, but He also gave us free-will to make a choice and being gay is a choice. Find people who have been delivered from being gay and perhaps you may be enlightened. We have to get out of this mindset of allowing children to be what they THINK they want to be. Parents are stewards of children and are expected to raise them with morals that line up according to the Word (Holy Bible) and not according to what society accepts.

The gay folk are having a field day.

Note: Apparently some of you aren't familiar with "message boards," because there's confusion on where that quote came from - it's from some anonymous Phil viewer, not the host.

We never quite know what to make of these stories…

Australian researchers have found suggestive evidence that transgender identities are genetic. From the BBC:

DNA analysis from 112 male-to-female transsexual volunteers showed they were more likely to have a longer version of the androgen receptor gene.

The genetic difference may cause weaker testosterone signals, the team reported in Biological Psychiatry.

However, other genes are also likely to play a part, they stressed.

Increasingly, biological factors are being implicated in gender identity.

Now, we're obviously curious to know why people are gay, straight, trans and the such, but opening up this can of worms also invites genetic manipulation.

For example, if this can be nailed down, so to speak, does that mean women may one day be able to determine prenatally whether or not their child will be trans? If that happens, will said woman abort her "abnormal" baby. Then again, such evidence suggests being trans is, in fact, quite normal. What say you, reader? Should scientists be searching for the reason why people "deviate" from the norm, or should we turn our backs on such research?

Things are coming up justice for Michelle Bruce!

Georgia's Supreme Court today ruled that Bruce, who is a trans woman, did not mislead voters during her city council reelection campaign in Riverdale, Georgia:

The Georgia Supreme Court's unanimous ruling on Monday found that the two political opponents who filed the lawsuit failed to produce evidence of fraud, misconduct or illegal action after claiming that Michelle Bruce bamboozled voters by identifying herself as female.

"This is a great victory for me and anyone who believes in equality," Bruce said in a statement. "It gives me hope that the Georgia Supreme Court did what was right and did not buy into hate-based politics."

Bruce, who lost the election, says she's taking online courses and hopes to become an elected official again in the near future.

"[Sacramento's] gay community is on alert this morning after the body of a transgendered man was pulled from the American River over the weekend. The body of a transgender man was found Sunday. Police aren't sure if this was a hate crime. They're waiting for autopsy results to learn more. Meanwhile, the Sacramento Gay and Lesbian Center is sending out emails, warning people to be careful in the area." [CBS 13]

In 2004, after working as an Army Special Forces commander, a man named David Schroer applied for a job as the senior terrorism analyst at the Library of Congress.

All seemed to be going well and Schroer seemed like a shoe-in, but things got more complicated when David said he planned on becoming Diane. The Library didn't seem to approve, because Schroer was told he couldn't have the job. Well, fast-forward four years and the Library of Congress now finds itself guilty of discrimination.

Some rabbis at New York's Yeshiva University are in a kanipshin over professor Joy Ladin, formerly known as Jay.

Ladin, who heads the school's literature department, announced two years ago that she was transgender and planned on becoming a woman.

University leaders weren't pleased, but were powerless to stop Ladin, lest they find themselves in court, and now Ladin's returned to work with breasts in tow. And, of course, senior faculty are voicing their concern.

Rabbi Moshe Tendler of the rabbinical school simply can't stand Ladin's transformation - and says the Torah doesn't, either:

He's not a woman. He's a male with enlarged breasts. He's a person who represents a kind of amorality which runs counter to everything Yeshiva University stands for. There is just no leeway in Jewish law for a transsexual.

There is no niche where he can hide out as a female without being in massive violation of Torah law, Torah ethics and Torah morality.

Meanwhile, Ladin's fighting with her family. Her wife has filed for divorce and took their three children away.

Some of the gals on America's Next Top Model aren't feeling trans contestant Isis.

One of the ladies, Sharaun, remarked, quite crudely, "America's Next Top Model is not going to be a drag queen. I'm sorry. It's not." Apparently Sharaun fancies herself a prophet, or something.

Meanwhile, pals Hannah and Clark bonded over their bigotry, which they justify with their "small town" upbringings.

Hannah: "I think the thing about Isis though is, like, I was like trying to convince myself I was comfortable. I can't even comprehend I'm comfortable. But really, I'm not. Sometimes people have a really warped view of transgender people… Coming from a small town, hell yeah we have a warped view."

Clark: "Hell yeah. You walk around like that in a small town, you get shot. And it's not so much a close-minded view, it's just more traditional. Coming from a good Southern family I was really thrown back by Isis. Growing up in the South you don't exactly run into a 'he-she' every day. Isis has no place in this competition."

These girls are not going to go far in the fashion world, which, as you know, is run by the lavender set.

Not all the ladies are so close-minded. McKey spent some time with Isis and described her as a "butterfly." Ain't that sweet?

A handful of people are talking about America's Next Top Model again thanks to the addition of the show's first ever trans contestant, Isis.
