For one thing, the sexes are separated almost entirely in Muslim countries. In Lahore, I saw women only in the airport and hotel. I can't claim to understand this at all, but:

Steven Coll's Ghost Wars (which should be required reading) focuses mostly on the mujahaadeen and the CIA, but offers a brief glimpse into the early Taliban camps. Their armies were attended by effeminate young-boy camp-followers. The leaders had their boy-lovers. It was all quite open.

And yet they had the death penalty for "homosexuality."
