Taking a cue from Adidas, Target is the latest company to jump on the Pride marketing wagon.
The discount retailer just announced its #TakePride campaign, which features a line of affordable Pride merchandise.
The company also released a video inviting everyone to take pride in who they are.
On the heels of a controversial donation in 2010 to Republican gubernatorial candidate Tom Emmer, an opponent of same-sex marriage, the retail behemoth has gone into overdrive to show its support for LGBTs. Three years ago the company even enlisted pop singer-turned-fashionista Gwen Stefani to design T-shirts that support a person’s right to love whomever he chooses.
How about we take this to the next level?
Our newsletter is like a refreshing cocktail (or mocktail) of LGBTQ+ entertainment and pop culture, served up with a side of eye-candy.
On Monday, Laysha Ward, Target’s social responsibility officer, posted on the company’s blog to reiterate the chain’s position on equality:
“Target proudly stands with the LGBT community, both as a team member and team player through all that we do—from our volunteer efforts to our long-standing partnerships with groups like Family Equality Council and Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network, to the very products we carry in our stores and online.”
Check out the heartwarming video below. Happy Pride!

Online only, not sold in stores.

This is cool.
Steve McKeown
Love the concept, but Target has left Canada.
Paul Tidd
The SF target had a Pride section last year. I got some great shirts the day after pride for 75% off.
Danny Severino
Whatever

@Owen Myers: Not all stores, but some. Also, on another note, Target’s pride gear has been online in previous years.

I wonder if they’re hoping a new infusion of gay retail fairy dust will help boost their sagging bottom line.
SpunkyBunks
Target is another fake gay supporter. History doesn’t lie. And they are expensive!

I bought a pride shirt from them 3 years ago when they were raising money for groups b promoting same sex families.

Sorry, don’t want my credit card info leaked. So I’ll pass.

They just want your queer dollars, boo.

I wonder if any of the Columbus, Ohio stores will carry pride stuff? Maybe I’ll check when I’m on my lunch break.
Ricky Wayne Phillips
I’m from Dallas, don’t think they will be in stores here.
Roger Honeycutt
Put it in all stores all the time otherwise your just like every other business who hangs a rainbow flag out front just because its pride or southern decadence
Bobby French
This is not the first year. Target had Pride items for salelast year, too.
William C Grenillo
If and when I get pride stuff I go out of my way and go to the mom and mom, pop and pop stores…small gay and lesbian stores that need my support
Harley
My oh my. Where in the world is Tony Duggar Perkins, Sarah Duggar Palin, and Franklin Duggar Graham going to but their clothes now? They are running out of businesses to boycott.
Harley
Buy. Where is the edit button.
Tony Lawrence
of course, no larger sizes….only 2x….too bad

The site tells me I post too fast when I have not even posted. WTF?

I Applied to Target Once- Admittedly about 12 years ago- and one of the questions on their app was “Do You Know any Homosexual People” I Swear to God-I don’t think I even finished the application- I walked out and haven’t been into a Target since- You might possibly sponge the spots off a leopard- but he’d be a leopard just the same!

Target is just one of many greedy businesses targeting gay dollars. I really don’t care; I don’t buy all that rainbow crap anyway. What I want to know is how many of those gay dollars go into employee salaries and benefits. Or, like most retailers, are they paying minimum wage, giving part-time schedules and providing no benefits? That’s a lot more important to me than buying a pair of flip-flops with rainbows on them.

@SpunkyBunks: Target is expensive? Where do you shop? The 99 cent store?
Sluggo2007
@Ricky Wayne Phillips: Exactly. I’ll bet for sure that this commercial doesn’t play below the Mason-Dixon line.

I always thought there was something…something about the rubbers they used in their bags.
