Los Angeles-based singer Tom Goss gives Dusty Springfield’s classic tune “Son of a Preacher Man” a surprising gay twist in his latest music video. The video, which was released today, tells the story of the sweet-talkin’ teenage son of an antigay preacher man who falls in love with another teenager in his dad’s congregation.

“The story of the video is one that hits home to me,” Goss says. “I had planned to become a Catholic priest–I spent 18 months in seminary following college before I realized I was gay. I also attempted suicide when I was 13. Although it was for different reasons, it’s a place that I’ve been.”

Moving video, always thought it was always about US !

Some religions are learning and advancing to support us. The Catholic church is old and stuck in its dark ages doctrine and will need modern day thinking to free it from its past.

WOW! So powerful!! It’s a disgrace that the beginning and the middle of this video happen every single week someplace in the world.

Absolutely beautiful. It was wonderfully literal, without the pretentious symbolism that often muddle these type of videos. The story was simple and the emotions were raw. Despite the short length, we’re taken on a journey, at one point not even knowing whether the journey will end in tragedy or triumph. The fact that I want to know what happens after the video ends is the best compliment of all. Bravo!

FYI, Aretha Franklin turned down this song because she thought the lyrics were blasphemous. The song them went to Dusty Springfield and the rest is history.
Ironically, Dusty Springfield was openly bisexual. By ironic, I mean that unlike this video, these lyrics actually confirm Springfield’s hetero side.

I am a Gay Christian. When I was a teenager my best friend was my preacher’s son. I’d have given anything to let him know I was gay, but in the 60s/70s in Alabama it wasn’t even something I knew about. I only knew we had great fun, hung out together, had sleepovers, and loved him like my brother. Today he knows I’m gay and we have reconnected via Facebook, after 40 years. His dad would never have hated me, or him, if he’d known I was gay. For that I am thankful. I have heard from a couple sources, that he, too, is gay, after being married and having two sons. Maybe one day I can tell him how much I loved him then.

Just more proof that religion is bullshit.

Assuming you are both single, don’t let the moment pass. Life is too short to live with regrets At worst, he’ll feel flattered and maybe even have a good laugh. At best, you’ll end up being a couple, long overdue…

Beautiful.
Oh yeah, jtip_psp, don’t put off telling him what you felt/feel for him. Life is way too short for that.
