The Curious (Practice?) Marriage Ceremony Between 2 Airmen

[flv:http://media.queerty.net/soldierwedding.mp4 http://www.queerty.com/wp/docs/2011/04/gaymar045.jpg 650 400]

It, um, seems like these two male Air Force servicemembers are not taking their rehearsal wedding seriously? (They are thumb wrestling during it!) But the caption on the YouTube video says they are “Practicing a speech for a wedding”; it doesn’t seem like they’re just acting as stand-ins for a real couple. But very clearly the ceremony is between two men; they both recite vows about taking the other man to be a “husband.” The man officiating the ceremony declares them “husbands.” They do exchange rings. I think their names are Adam and Hank? (It’s hard to tell from the audio.) So confusing! Also, so cute! Except does posting this video count as them acknowledging their homosexuality? Call the DADT police!

I didn’t think you were able to dip in uniform. It’s gross. The video…well I haven’t been this confused since my wedding.

I think they’re just timing the ceremony, actually. “Yeah, it’s only 6 and half minutes.”

David: You’re correct that the US wasted millions spent on enforcing DADT and kicking out trained members of the armed forces.

@David: 1. Do you KNOW that to be true?
      2. How many straight weddings have occurred, say, at the Air Force Academy? You know, that bastion of christianity…the weddings with the swords???

Shhhhhh! It’s a secret weapon. They’re going to load it on iPods and drop them on the Taliban from drones. The Taliban dudes will see it and their turbans will explode. Victory is ours!

I think it’s pretty obvious that they’re timing a trial run, since about three minutes in the guy reading the speech from his blackberry (haha, another hint it’s not an actual ceremony) says “that was the first half of the speech, and it’s been three minutes.” I don’t really understand why people feel the need to share home videos with the whole world, but to each his own I guess. It was cute.

Something’s not right about this video.

Nevermind the two soldiers in camos. Wearing what look to be Air Force insignia.

More of note is the “officiant.” He looks to be a more senior enlisted man. He’s not a chaplain. This isn’t a practice.

Further, at 2:44, the “officiant” says, “I’d like to invite the mothers of the bridge and groom to come forward…” Up to this point, the guy’s been acting like this is a same-sex ceremony and as if the script were written that way. However, this part suggests he may be improvising the same-sex part – possibly for laughs.

I don’t know why they’re doing this, but they’re not doing it for the “aww shucks” reason you think they are.

They look like soldiers with too much time on their hands.

If we’re gonna throw people out of the military for arbitrary things, why don’t we throw them out for THAT disgusting habit instead of DADT?

First of all, the participants aren’t soldiers, they’re airmen.

Second, this is obviously a joke. There’s zero affection between the two grooms and they make it a point to mess around when forced to hold hands.

Third, the fidgeting indicates that they’re uncomfortable or bored with the whole exercise.

Lastly, the timing of the scenario suggests they’re planning a skit of some sort.

@Mil: Perhaps you’re right. I don’t recall seeing many “airmen” holding guns and serving on the front lines of anywhere.

      Guess they’re not “soldiers.”

      @TommyOC:
Actually thousands of airman were and are doing Army jobs in Iraq and Afghanistan because the Army doesn’t have enough available troops. The AF is running a PRT is Paktika province for example. They are also doing general resupply missions and other stuff.

I think this is their attempt to make fun of the impending repeal of DADT.

Or they were thumb wrestling to see who tops (or bottoms?).

To me the video had the same vibe as one of the ‘empathy building’ role-playing scenarios we’d have to do to be frosh week leaders at university. Maybe with the impending DADT repeal, these guys were being trained to enact a fake uniformed same-sex wedding in front of others to show that the idea of two men taking marriage vows isn’t as ‘alien’ as their (presumed-to-be-homophobic) peers think, or to desensitize them to the image. If they aren’t homophobic themselves and they don’t take people who are seriously, then they likely wouldn’t take an exercise that’s supposed to get them ‘over it’ very seriously either, which could explain the goofing off. Better that, at least, then acting all petulant and disgusted when told to hold hands.
