After becoming the first openly gay soccer player in 1990, Justin Fashanu killed himself in 1998, and now his niece is speaking out about what she calls a “dark” world for gay athletes — and her knowledge of seven more gay players.
Speaking to BBC Radio Five Live, Amal Fashanu paints a distressing picture of gay footballers:
“I actually know myself of seven. I will never, ever share their details. I’m not going to out them because I would never do that. You want to be honest, even to help them out, but you just can’t do that. The football world is extremely dark. I don’t even want to imagine being a footballer, what it must be like.”
In the U.S., Los Angeles Galaxy player Robbie Rogers is the only out gay soccer player in the sport. Hopefully more will follow suit and follow in Fashanu’s footsteps in the future.

@Brian: It always amuses me when people make up definitions for words or engage in meaningless “social theory” with no basis in reality. the use of the word by by male homosexuals arose from the use of it to denote people not constrained by prevailing social mores. It has been used this way since the 17th century or earlier. The shift towards use as a reference for male homosexuality was well underway by the 29th century, and the first use in the media was seen in the 1920’s. The extension of gay life to refer to homosexuality was a natural one and the gay/straight dichotomy was used even before that extension.
The idea you humorously suggest exists only in your mind, there is no conspiracy or dark intent here at all. That is only in your imagination!
As for homosexual desire being present in all men, that is not supported by facts, but is (again) simply speculation or wishful thinking on your part.

That should read 20th century! And by the way, one of the earliest uses in literature of the word to refer exclusively to gay men (as opposed to the gay life in general) was by Gertrude Stein.

And if you’re “sick of the gay identity” (which does not exist, since gay is simply a slang term for male and sometimes female homosexuals; has been since the 70’s and is certainly nicer than the all inclusive and questionable “queer”), perhaps you need to look at what your own identity is, or maybe seek out “reparation therapy”. I suppose Jesus could help, as he helped all those Exodus International fools!

@Michael Golden: Soccer was off the radar for most Americans back then. Seems it has been “about to take off” here since the 70’s. I only knew it from foreign friends and from a friend who had been a professional referee/manager and went on to be very involved with the Gay Games. He (of course) followed the sport like some folks follow baseball.
I still don’t really know it well, but the games are easily as exciting to watch as basketball (or more, as it is a whole lot harder to score in soccer).

What a buffoon you are! One cannot “not agree” with facts. I state the actual history of the use of the word Gay in contrast to your imagined meaning. You are simply incorrect and no amount of belief or opinion changes that. As for your own issues with your gayness, deal with them. But understand that just as imagination does not change reality, neither does projection.

@dwes09: And there is no evidence at all that homosexual desire exists in all men. Dogma does not change reality. Some men have homosexual desire, most do not. End of story, regardless of whether it makes you peevish or not. Reality cares nothing for “social theory”. And (why do I have to repeat this so much) opinion without empirical back uo, especially in the sciences, is worthless.
