Most importantly though – the general population of modders and players on forums for the game are pretty casual about the gay/lesbian story lines

The thing with the Zevran romance is it does start out as a casual thing for him, and it is easy to sleep with him. However you can continue to talk to him and slowly he starts falling in love with you.

Eventually he will give you an earring as a sign of his affections. He will even refuse to sleep with you until he sorts out his feelings. At the end of the game he will want to stay with you.

I’m straight and into old fashioned romance myself, so the relationship buildup with Leliana was my favorite. But my gay friends have complained about how the same sex relations are a little stereotypical in what they’ve seen.

Alistair will only be with women, and gets the normal romantic, flirty, teasing relationship.

Morrigan only wants men, and she’s the emo “love is a lie” type, who you basically have to have the sexual booty call with for a while before she will start to realize that she cares about more than just your body.

Leliana goes both way, but either way, you have to go through the romantic courtship. It’s all emotional and loving and sweet. Giving her lots of flowers and gifts and a pet and all…

Zevran however, well, he’ll sleep with anything. His character is raised by prostitutes, and brought up with the idea that sex is just good fun and should be enjoyed whenever, with whoever. There’s not really any “romance” with him, and he’s by far the easiest character to sleep with. He’s also the one into BDSM.

Now, personally, I don’t really have a problem with Zevran. But I can see how some might get annoyed that the gay man is the one who does “everything else”. But considering that they only had 4 relationship characters, they had to sort out things somehow, and try to give as many different styles as possible.
I’m hoping that perhaps in their next game, they might still have 2 hetero characters, 2 bi, and 2 who are homo only. Because from what I’ve seen, they’ve never given that choice. They have people who will go both ways, but they’ve never had any exclusively gay characters.

Their games are also the best.

oh and seriously? Leliana? I would have figured Morrigan as the hot-goth-bi-girl. huh.

I liked the gender-twist on “As the actress said to the bishop…”.

You are right, however, that they’re getting slightly racier, but that’s happening across the board. BioWare’s first foray into a same-sex romance subplot, in Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, ended in a confession of lesbian love but no physical interaction whatsoever. Their first man-on-man romance (in Jade Empire, which also allowed a lesbian romance and a MFF threeway) was criticized because while all of the hetero romances ended in screen kisses, the gay male romance just faded to black. Their next major RPG, Mass Effect, didn’t include any explicitly gay or lesbian romances, though it did include a possible romance between a female character and a female-like monogendered alien. And the romance climaxes were more explicit–basically just a roll in the sheets, nothing you wouldn’t see on prime time.

In that regard, it looks like Dragon Age is just continuing the trend of racier romance subplots while restoring the trend towards inclusiveness that Mass Effect largely skipped over.

And it’s inaccurate too — I’ve know many dwarfish bottoms.

Zevran has the accent of the human culture he was raised among after being sold as an infant.

and it’s an elf with a human. even more shocking.

Also, unfortunately Zevran is a lot less hot in the game than in his concept art, in which he wears a nipple-grazing merry-widow/bustier type thing with bare tattooed shoulders.

GoKitty: As a female character you get to romance the adorable Alistair, you lucky bitch! You can also go for Leliana or Zevran, both of whom swing both ways. Morrigan is the only one of the love interests who doesn’t like girls, and Alistair is the only one who doesn’t like boys.

This is not the first time BioWare has done this though, just the first time with the main character. I believe in their Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic rpg, there was a lesbian jedi.
