The Legacy of Jorge Steven López Mercado

Of course funerals are morbid. But watching this one — the burial of slain Puerto Rican teen Jorge Steven López Mercado — where his mother Myriam gives a speech to supporters, reminds us that even this new generation of gay men and women, with the freedom and spectacle of Adam Lamberts, are not immune to the homophobia and the violence we’ve spent generations fighting. You’re in our prayers, Jorge. Rest well. (via)

Tomorrow is Thanksgiving. I thank Jorge and his mother for sharing with me their story of love together. He had a network of support and love which is beautiful. This is the reality of a homophobic world today, but hopefully not tomorrow.

When she says perversidad she means evil not perversion. And I guess we can agree she says one of the most beautiful things a parent has ever said when a child comes out, not “I still love you,” not “I love you the same” but “I love you even more now.”
