Bianca, I'm sure Adam knows better, and that's what I find disturbing in that interview. When it came to gay people he chose to concentrate only on the negative. What it is up with that? Why is he doing that? Doesn't look good to me. Adam has been quite brave, and I applaud him for that. But I've seen him be quite weak too. And that will reflect on him. People recognize that, and he's in a different position than other performers whether he likes it or not - and I'm not talking about perceptions by gay people.

I've never had the impression that Adam values criticism, or acknowledges it. Frankly, I don't think he does much reading. What I and others say here is for the mostly gay people that like to hang out here. This isn't mainstream media, and what is said here is not going to stray from these confines. But this is where varying opinions and points of view should be expressed, and as you can see from these threads, they are. I think that now that Adam has a chance at stardom, it would be valuable for him to broaden his horizons and consider some other points of view. It might help him to navigate his own PR. And maybe he'd decide to drop that corny, goddamned "it's not that deep." Jeez.

Romeo - 61. You said

"Christopher Isherwood, Tennessee Williams, Gore Vidal, Oscar Wilde, Virginia Woolfe, Willa Cather, Somerset Maugham, Walt Whitman, and I literally could go on and on. Some of the very greatest literature has been written about gay relationships, albeit some of the writers had to couch their stories as straight relationships to keep from going to jail in their time. But novels like "Maurice" were written defiantly. "Orlando" is another grand epic lesbian love poem.

And we are the best writers, painters, sculptors, architects, nuclear physicists — it's ludicrous how our grand achievements have been denied us and squelched. And Adam knows nothing of all this."
**********************************************
Fisrt of all, I generally agree with everything you said there and especially the last two sentences. It's funny though how in the main paragraph you give a long list of great (gay) ones saying how they wrote about gay relationships but had to mask them as straight relationships. Then they aren't "gay relationships anymore, are they?

As for your post #64, we ALL see reality through our own, specific life experiences and the things that happened to US. You can't say he didn't encounter discrimination and hate not only because he did mention it a few times but I actually have a feeling he's not mentioned a lot of what he's experienced in that sense. You are right probably in the sense that in the artistic world gays are more sheltered and in a sense have an easier life because many there are gay themselves so they aren't a minority in those circles as in others but I'm sure he's had lots of unpleasant encounters with the "straight" world up until not long ago.

As a general comment I just want to say that when reading all kinds of gay sites/blogs, one thing that's obvious is that there's by no means a consensus about gay issues and in fact, there's lots of disagreement about issues.

Romeo-59

As for him (allegedly) saying "straight relationships are better than gay ones" - I've NEVER read/seen him say that and I mean NEVER. What he said there I took as meaning that "the straight model" is everywhere and prevalent (which it is) and that's what people get to see, gay and straight.

I'll cnntinue reading the rest of the posts and reply.

Cheers.

Tommy, you've obviously never read some of my other posts if you think I think all gay men are angels. That wasn't the point. Gay men are a lot of different things. And often monogamous and faithful. But Adam IS saying in that article that ALL gay men are basically sluts that can't be trusted in relationships. Look at the interview, Part 2. And Adam uses the word gay at several points and does not specify men, though he may have intended that. He also makes some absurd notions about our not being able to create art - guess he never heard of the Sistine Chapel or...jeez, where can I start from there.

Adam is blowing hot air in his interviews. He's not thinking about the damage he could cause, and probably will. We've got every right to call him on it because we're the ones getting damaged.

As for you, Tommy, just like Adam, you need to get out and meet some nicer guys. They're out there.

And I'm not a professional gay. I'm just someone saying something you disagree with. Maybe it's time you heard a different point of view.

I don't think the guy is cute or like his music. but everything he said about the "gay community' is the absolute truth. So he goes up in my opinion for being honest about that. Some people don't like the truth.
There's a certain amount of people like Romeo who want to sweep anything negative about the gay community underneath the rug and pretend we are all perfect angels.
Adam didn't say every gay person like that but there's a large part of the gay community that is that way.
Most straight men would love to be promiscuous but women aren't interested in that so they are out of luck. It's not because straight men are more moral than us. We just have more opportunities.
And he didn't say all gay people, just gay men tend to be that way. I guess lesbians aren't part of the gay community according to Romeo.
I'm a gay man because I sleep with men, but I don't define myself by my sexuality just like Adam. I will never be a professional gay like Romeo here.
And of course he's attacked on gay blogs. Gay people always eat their own and attack one another.
We complain and complain about homophobia. But how do we treat each other? Like crap, most of the time.

And I have news for Adam about straight guys in their 20's. LMAO Hell, straight guys at any age if they can get away with it. Other than his own sordid life, everything coming out of his mough is all stereotypes and cliches. We can get that in a pamphlet at any local archdiocese.

I'm serious. Years of struggle to try to speak the truth about the complexity and diversity of our experience so that we can be treated like something other than a subspecies could be greatly harmed by Adam's mouth and its media access. And I'm not saying he should be a spokesman. All he needs to do really is relate his experience as his own, and not gay people generally. He should, but he obviously knows nothing about what most gay people face, even in this day and age.

Oh, and newsflash to Adam, the "post-gay" shit is just a bunch of academics that don't want to be called fag. They're just blowing hot air out their asses. We are nowhere near yet where they're pretending we are. And they're screwing a lot of things up with their delusional rhetoric.

Interesting plot diversion, these comments. I'll put my two cents in. Gay men aren't promiscuous. That word is coming from a anti-sex sort of whorish way of looking at things. And also kind of idiotic, some of the first chances he has to speak about his tribe, he basically calls us sex starved males with no hope for relationships....He's lame.

Get back on the disney cruise ship Adam.

Bianca, Bianca, where does Adam get off saying we are segregated from straight society? Most of us never were. Show business types can maybe get away with that, but the vast majority have to navigate in the world as a whole. He's also very delusional about how easy it is yet to be gay and totally accepted. Maybe in the narrow confines again of show business, but even there. He himself has said he came up against gay paranoia and prejudice in the musical theater, of all places. Adam's experience and viewpoints are very narrow, and I don't fault him for that. I do fault him for pontificating on things he obviously doesn't understand. The fact that he uses a media defined phrase like "gay community" instead of "gay people" says a lot to me. There is no gay "community." That's an empty cliche. Adam knows nothing about the vast world of our people that get up every morning, pull up their socks and go out into a real, everyday world and deal with it in spite of all.

Adam's just a club boy, a talented one, but a club boy. He knows virtually nothing about the reality of gay people's lives off of Santa Monica Boulevard. That's obvious.

The fact that he uses a media defined phrase like “gay community” instead of “gay people” says a lot to me. There is no gay “community.” That’s an empty cliche. Adam knows nothing about the vast world of our people that get up every morning, pull up their socks and go out into a real, everyday world and deal with it in spite of all.

Adam’s just a club boy, a talented one, but a club boy. He knows virtually nothing about the reality of gay people’s lives off of Santa Monica Boulevard. That’s obvious.

Christopher Isherwood, Tennessee Williams, Gore Vidal, Oscar Wilde, Virginia Woolfe, Willa Cather, Somerset Maugham, Walt Whitman, and I literally could go on and on. Some of the very greatest literature has been written about gay relationships, albeit some of the writers had to couch their stories as straight relationships to keep from going to jail in their time. But novels like "Maurice" were written defiantly. "Orlando" is another grand epic lesbian love poem.

And we are the best writers, painters, sculptors, architects, nuclear physicists -- it's ludicrous how our grand achievements have been denied us and squelched. And Adam knows nothing of all this.

He makes me yearn for the days before video killed the radio star. He is so much more interesting as a faceless voice. When I see him, I find it very challenging to look past his overly styled hair and the heavy eye liner. I don't know why he hides himself behind hair over his face and a lot of make-up. Someone like Neil Patrick Harris is sexy for just being Neil Patrick without the gimmicks.

"It's socially accepted to be promiscuous..." "We're supposed to want to fuck all the time and cheat on each other..." "I don't think it's emotionally healthy..." "Even in the arts, a lot of art is about love and relationships, and there's a lot of hetero art about it..." "But when it comes to the gay community, there's just not a lot. And some of it's so..." Negative, negative, negative.

As for the straight relationships, I think I recall there's more to the text than you quote, but even what you have shows the tenor of his notion, which, incidentally, is quite ignorant of the enormous volume of excellent gay art, literature, etc.. that show very powerful relationships.

The problem with Adam is he's basically uneducated and unformed, and a total loose cannon.

Found more:

'There’s a way in which both you and Neil Patrick Harris are being talked about as exceptions to the rule, to the idea that there could never be an out, gay leading man or male musical star. You both seem very confident and comfortable with who you are. But that’s not always true of your handlers. We’ve gotten plenty of push back from your management -- and many other people’s -- who say, “Well, let’s not be too gay…”
Well, you know, I think that there’s something to that, though. I think the whole magic of this moment is that I’m not alienating anybody. I’m not trying to anyway. I want as many people to feel like they can like the music. I don’t want to edit myself to the point where I feel like I don’t have integrity. But at the same time, I feel like I don’t want to alienate people, so it’s really hard. It’s almost like being a political figure. It’s like a balancing act. I feel really good about how open I’ve been, ’cause I really don’t feel like I’ve hidden anything. It’s like the picking and choosing. When is it appropriate and when is it not? One of the things that I don’t like about the gay community is that people define themselves by their sexuality -- and that’s bullshit. It shouldn’t be about that. It should be that it just so happens that you’re this or that, and that’s your sexuality. It doesn’t mean that that should dictate what your social group is or where you go out or who you talk to or what your interests are. That’s bullshit. That’s outdated.

It’s very narrow.
The segregation [from straight people] that exists in the gay community is outdated. At a time, it was necessary because we weren’t accepted. And now that acceptance is moving way forward, over the past 10 years. I think that we need to move forward too, and I think we need to kind of like, stop being so segregated and just be.

How do you describe your sexuality?
I think one of the things about the gay community that’s really interesting is that while people own their homosexuality, there is a strange aversion to letting the masculine and the feminine exist within you in a balanced way. And for me, personally, I feel I have a very strong masculine side, and I also have a very strong feminine side. And a lot of people are scared to live in that gray area. There’s boys out in Boystown that are either really fem or really butch. It’s at the extremes. I love when I meet people that are just kind of comfortable being both. And they don’t have to identify being really butch or really fem. Why? Why would you have to?

Romeo, my love, just for you, I went and read it again. So, here are the parts it seems you had a problem with (as I understand from you):

"What was the wall you hit with him?

Sometimes it’s hard to, like, be a boyfriend for somebody, because you don’t know what that means. What does that mean? Especially if you haven’t been in many relationships. And being in the gay community, we don’t grow up with any role models for that. We don’t know what we’re supposed to be. And I think that’s funny because there’s so much -- again, it’s something that’s being evolved out of, but in the gay community there’s so much promiscuity. It’s socially accepted in the gay community to be promiscuous. It’s like, oh, we’re both men, we’re supposed to want to fuck all the time and cheat on each other. And it’s OK, open relationships are fine because we’re all men. And I’m not judging that, but I don’t think that’s for me. I don’t think it’s emotionally healthy.

.
.
.
And you don’t have all these other models. Not that they necessarily fit so well for straight people.

No, but there’s more of them. Even in the arts, a lot of art is about love and relationships, and there’s a lot of hetero art about it. But when it comes to the gay community, there’s just not a lot. And some of it’s so -- I have such a love-hate relationship with the concept. Like, I can only watch Logo for a couple minutes. It’s a little too --
"

Is that it? Where did he say "straight relationships are a better example"?

You tell me also where do you see he said all gays are sluts?

Bianca: Yes, I did read the interview when it came out. I'm not trying to hold Adam to an unreasonable standard. And I know he has his own perspective, and he's entitled to it. But that goes for everybody.

When he paints ALL gay people promiscuous and unfaithful and stresses, as he did in that interview in OUT, that straight relationships are better, that's not just as bad as a Mormon politician, or a fundie, or a Catholic Archbishop saying it, and that's what those people say, it's a hell of a lot WORSE because it's coming out of ADAM LAMBERT'S mouth. I know how that can be used against us. Unfairly. We don't have his access to the media. Sorry, Bianca.

@ Kristina #51: Baby, you totally DON'T get him, I guarantee you. LOL

And Bianca: ease up, Swarm is not quoting Adam about the role models, I don't believe. She's just making an observation which jibes with what he's been saying about gay people. And the OUT interview wasn't the only place he's laid that stuff on us. What I see is him blaming all the rest of us for his own inability to get his shit together. And I guarantee you that I came out of a worse home life and fucked up childhood than he ever did. We all have a tale to tell.

Don't beat up on Swarm. She's just calling it like she sees it, as am I.

Romeo, did you read that HUGE interview he gave the LA times a few months ago??
The best interview from him ever. Actually, it's one of the best interviews I've ever read with anyone.
It's very long and extensive and has 4 parts. If you haven't, here it is:

You can find parts 2,3,4 here:

@ Leigh#50: If he's such a nice guy, what was all that shit coming out of his mouth against gay people in the OUT interview. I'm sure Adam can be very nice, but not always, and not always when it could hurt a very vulnerable population that doesn't have his access to the media to defend themselves against what he says, however off the top of his head it may be. He's had to put up with a lot of shit. I don't deny that at all. But he could use a little sensitivity training himself. Like it or not, he's not the anonymous club boy anymore. There are consequences to what you say when you're a public person. plain and simple.

Swarm - 33 You said:

"As a mom and sister I say the kid all the time because he is. He had no gay role models and yes, due to theatrical life.He worked nonstop living alone from 19 on a stupid cruise ship. He's emotionally immature in this aspect. Which is WHY he is not prepared to be a role model or civil rights leader to anyone. All he ever offered to do was to meet kids and encourage them that he felt out of place, too and they are not alone.

No more than that. Glambert women lgbt and straight have been screaming this all along. Notwithstanding his sexual performance which are just that. PERFORMANCES. GAMES.

When he decided to focus on "love" at 24 he found Brad.(Cheeks) Jesus F*kn Christ what could be worse for learning the "normal" mature life of most settled gay men.

I think he's been trying to say that and nobody is listening or even researching to understand why. His brother

Neil a quasi writer attempted to blog about infiltrating a tea party as a teabagger and failed miserably because he had absolutely ZERO knowledge of ANYTHING. It was embarrassing and laughable. And no interest in learning about it either.

That's the family he comes from. Father a "poet" (not really) and record spinner and mother an artsy something decorator."
******************************************************
What a pile of pretentious, arrogant crap!

He never said he didn't have "gay role models". He talked about "gay role models as COUPLES"! Do you have reading comprehension problems? He meant it the same way as a straight person who comes from a broken home says they didn't have any roles models concerning relationships/marriage/partnership.
Way to take it out of context!

Lovely job on his family there. His "quasi writer brother"? He's 23-24 still trying to find his place in life.
"Father a "poet" (not really) and record spinner and mother an artsy something decorator.
That's the family he comes from".

WOW! Just WOW! You tried hard to make his family sound like some kind of trailer trash, didn't you?

No more than that. Glambert women lgbt and straight have been screaming this all along. Notwithstanding his sexual performance which are just that. PERFORMANCES. GAMES.

When he decided to focus on “love” at 24 he found Brad.(Cheeks) Jesus F*kn Christ what could be worse for learning the “normal” mature life of most settled gay men.

I think he’s been trying to say that and nobody is listening or even researching to understand why. His brother

Neil a quasi writer attempted to blog about infiltrating a tea party as a teabagger and failed miserably because he had absolutely ZERO knowledge of ANYTHING. It was embarrassing and laughable. And no interest in learning about it either.

That’s the family he comes from. Father a “poet” (not really) and record spinner and mother an artsy something decorator.”
******************************************************
What a pile of pretentious, arrogant crap!

He never said he didn’t have “gay role models”. He talked about “gay role models as COUPLES”! Do you have reading comprehension problems? He meant it the same way as a straight person who comes from a broken home says they didn’t have any roles models concerning relationships/marriage/partnership.
Way to take it out of context!

Lovely job on his family there. His “quasi writer brother”? He’s 23-24 still trying to find his place in life.
“Father a “poet” (not really) and record spinner and mother an artsy something decorator.
That’s the family he comes from”.

WOW! Just WOW! You tried hard to make his family sound like some kind of trailer trash, didn’t you?

Reading this stuff - makes one feel really discouraged. Is this the way we treat one another? With regard to Lambert - the guy's really nice - people who work with him really like him. He's good looking, puts on a great performance, loves to entertain, has a terrific voice - just an all-round great guy. Yeah, just don't understand how people, hiding under anonymity, can put someone like this down. If they met the guy, they'd probably really like him.

Chris-20,not true. People mag chose him as one of the hottest bachelors of the year 2 weeks after the finale. I also remember he was at the top of the list.

http://www.people.com/people/package/gallery/0,,20283823_20285374,00.html#20634397

That was before the RS interview where he said he had oral sex with a girl.
ANother funny thing is that when they posted originally, they called him "American Idol WINNER", lol.

Doolan: early on I heard a LOT of gay men express a distrust in Adam. Something about him was too much the schmoozer, as one friend expressed it. I didn't share that opinion. I thought he was fierce and brave, but a little disoriented by what was happening to him. Beginning to think I was wrong. He's just playin' people. Not too fierce.

My brother has a dog named Doolan.

About the whole straight vs. gay thing. Perhaps gay men are tired of half in half out, mysterious androgenes that continuosly harvest our support whilst holding us at arms length. When will unabashedly gay male pop anything take the courage to be exactly themselves instead of catering to every demographic before the one they most identify with(privately of course). He had a chance from AI to be radical, but its rainbow lite as far as Im concerned and Ive seen it way too many times. pfft.

I just don't see what the problem is with straight women liking a gay man who they think is talented. This is like saying black men cannot like white women and vice versa, which makes it shameful and taboo.

I'm glad gay people have set me straight...I now require a scarlet G be branded on all gay performers so that I won't embarrass them by GULP spending money supporting their careers. Is this progress?

Adam never said he was the Gay MLK. He is a young man, stuck with shitty 19 management for the time being. I just don't get the hate just because he tasty fishy vagine once because thats where all the hate is, Adam does'nt hate women.

Hey, dipshits --

We're continuously ogling straight guys on Queerty. Why is it so implausible that a straight woman might find Adam Lambert sexy?

Or better yet, what makes you think that straight women are the only demo for People's "Sexiest" issue?

@Chris #32: Sorry, we have a lot of straight women coming in here as men to plead the "Adam is really straight" argument. LOL We had quite a lively discussion in here when Adam had that boob in his mouth. LOL Adam is coy, as in he knows where the $$$$$$$$$$ is.

Being on People 100 is a voting thing, and his fangirls go nuts with that. Bless their little hearts.
