The Real World Hits Capitol Hill

kevinpowell.jpegKevin Powell, from the original Real World is running for U.S. Congress in the 10th Congressional District in Brooklyn, New York. Platform issues: increasing literacy, job training in low-income areas, and health care accessibility. And yelling at girls from Alabama on the street.

If you’re young enough to have missed the original Real World season, it’s quite a shame, because the show was absolutely brilliant–and still holds up today (unlike current seasons that are over before the first episode rolls its credits). But who cares? The show was a zillion years ago. Although it should be noted that much of the success was a result of Kevin’s powerful intellect and strong sense of character, as he forged the way for others to step in front of a reality-TV camera and speak out about touchy political subjects. We’ve met Mr. Powell, through certain MTV connections, and he’s a brilliant, classy man. He’s made quite the name for himself as a writer for Newsweek, The Washington Post, and Rolling Stone, among other very high-profile publications. (BUT WAS HE EVER EDITOR OF A BLOG??? We think not! Who’s cool now?!) We sincerely wish him all the best. Maybe Norm can design his campaign posters and Heather B can be his spokesperson. She’d do all her speeches in the form of raps.
