Summer may be over, but this week we’re looking at all things camp!
VALLEY GIRLS
There’s already a drag stage version of The Golden Girls, so why not an all-male Valley of the Dolls? On September 27, a gaggle of L.A. gays will perform a one-night-only, “99% all-male” staged reading of the camp classic to raise funds for the 2012 AIDS/Lifecycle. (The one role played by a bio-gal is grande dame Helen Lawson.) an event like this definitely “makes a change from the fags you usually hang around with!” [VOTD]
RAISING THE ROOF
How about we take this to the next level?
Our newsletter is like a refreshing cocktail (or mocktail) of LGBTQ+ entertainment and pop culture, served up with a side of eye-candy.
The latest nubile actress to step into the role of Maggie the Cat is Scarlett Johansson. The kick-ass Avengers star has signed on to star in the upcoming Broadway revival of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof coming to the Richard Rodgers Theatre in December. Joining Johansson are Ciarán Hinds and Debra Monk as Big Daddy and Big Mama—and, as Maggie’s closeted hubbie Brick, is Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter‘s Benjamin Walker.

On Sunday, September, 23, theaterhounds will be rifling through piles of memorabilia and kibbitzing with stage stars at the 26th Annual Broadway Grand Flea Market along New York’s Shubert Alley. It’s a real treasure trove for Broadway geeks, packed to the balcony with rare programs, posters, cast albums, costumes torn off the backs of Hugh Jackman and Ricky Martin (woof!) and every tchotchke imaginable from the Great White Way. Proceeds from sales and the all-star auction benefit Broadway/Equity Fights AIDS—plus, all you stage-door Johnnies can get autographs from top-billed stars like Bebe Neuwirth, Bernadette Peters, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Donna Murphy and Harvey Fierstein. The theory that gay men give better head than women will be put to the test in the upcoming off-Broadway comedy Sex Tips for a Straight Woman From a Gay Man, being adapted from the book of the same name by Matt Murphy and Jim Brochu. The stage show follows the book’s authors, Dan Anderson and Maggie Berman, as they deliver sage advice to the audience with the help of a helpful (and hot) male model.
The book has risen in popularity—even getting a cameo in the film Hope Springs when Meryl Streep (!) consults it to help spice up her lackluster marriage. Although scheduled for early 2013, Tips has no run date, venue, director or cast.
Well, we’re sure some of you could teach a master class in the subject. [STFSWFGM]
