DRAGSTRIP 66

This Queer Nightlife Legend Wants To Go On The Record To Inspire Weirdos Everywhere

Screen Shot 2015-06-10 at 9.08.58 AMGay parties are a dime a dozen in cities like Los Angeles, where you’re just as likely to find corporate sponsors as you are gogo boys in designer underwear. Or to put it a bit less cynically, there are lots of perfectly fine events. And there’s nothing wrong with a perfectly fine night out.

But every now and then something comes along that transcends the moment. Unfortunately for anyone who never attended Dragstrip 66, it’s a then and not a now.

The legendary L.A. party got its start in 1993 and ran for an impressive 20 years, redefining what LGBT nightlife could offer inspiring offshoots in other cities — Squeezebox in New York and Trannyshack in San Francisco. Attendees wouldn’t bat an eye to find themselves dancing next to Roseanne Barr, Drew Barrymore, Adam Lambert or Nina Hagen.

A “come as you are” inclusive atmosphere made this freak flag-flying event everything a party should be — a celebration of connection.

And the themes! “Florence Of Arabia,” “Queen Acres,” “Victor/Victoria’s Secret,” “Mi Navidad Loca” — the list goes on.

Now, some of the event’s organizers and fans are working to raise money to produce Dragstrip 66: The Frockumentary, co-directed by Phil Scanlon and Paul V. that will put all the magic into the official record.

You can get a sense of it from some of the awesome imagery below, and if you want to find out more about the project, head here:
