Tony Awards Nominations Announced!

Theater titans Jane Krakowski and Taye Diggs joined forces today to announce The American Theatre Wing’s 61st annual Tony Awards’ Nominations, thus ushering in the gayest time of the year.

What’s so gay about it? Well, the Duncan Sheik scored, sexually-charged, morally-loose Spring Awakening raked in the most nominations. The musical walked away with eleven, including best musical male lead for Jonathan Groff and featured male lead for John Gallagher, Jr..

Mr. Sheik and lyricist Steven Slater were also nominated for best original score. Michael Korie and Scott Frankel, the music men behind gay favorite, Grey Gardens, were nominated in the same category. But, wait, it gets even more gay – if you can believe that…

Dramatic goddess Angela Lansbury may win her fifth award for her role as in Terrence McNally’s Deuce. Lansbury and Marian Seldes star as retired tennis pros. That’s sort of lesbianic. Plus, the gays love Lansbury. Bedknobs and Broomsticks, anyone?

In honor of the event, The American Theater Wing has organized a 15-day whirlwind of theatrical parties, including the American Theatre Wing Spring Gala on June 4th. Hope you have plans, because you probably weren’t invited. Don’t worry, we weren’t, either. Carol Channing, James Earl Jones and Tommy Tune were invited, however. Channing’s definitely a gay icon, even though she nearly went down in flames after that whole Bible scandal. Jones…well, he’s not particularly a gay icon, but you can’t really say anything bad about him. Tune definitely makes up for Jones’ heterosexuality. Tune’s a big, big gay. Remember his memoir, Footnotes? Give that thing a twirl and you’ve got 5000% of your daily recommended homo-themed reading.

Though the Tony Awards will be broadcast on June 10th, the Broadway themed (and fag-flavored) fun doesn’t end there. Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS hosts the 17th annual Broadway Bares charity, during which the Great White Way’s sexiest stars take it off to – you guessed it – fight AIDS. Here are some clips from last year’s Super Hero themed event:

Way gay. Be sure to buy your tickets for this year’s myth-oriented madness. Not incidentally, New York’s Gay Pride Week starts the same day…
