An array of trailblazing out professional athletes including tennis champs Billie Jean King and Martina Navratilova, baseball great Billy Bean, football legend Dave Kopay, and former pro basketballer John Amaechi have opened up to share their most personal struggles in a new documentary. Out To Win will make its world premiere March 15 at the SXSW film festival in Austin.
A press release for the doc describes it as “a film that serves as an overview and examination of lives and careers of aspiring and professional gay and lesbian athletes from all over the world. Chronicling the present, framed within a historical context of those that came before, this film highlights the experiences of athletes who have fought and struggled, both in and out of the closet, to represent the LGBT community and their true selves. This film is told through the voices of pioneers, present day heroes, tomorrow’s superstars and the people who’ve helped them succeed.”
Out To Win comes with an exceptional pedigree as it’s the latest from distinguished Canadian filmmaker Malcolm Ingram, who has made several other documentaries you should seek out. Small Town Gay Bar, which served as a testament to the bravery of Southern queer people, was released to much praise in 2006 and is available for viewing on Netflix. His 2013 documentary Continental offered a fascinating look at New York City’s legendary gay bathhouse Continental Baths and was shown to cheering audiences at numerous film festivals around the globe.

What trails did they blaze by waiting to come out after their careers were over?
Billie Bean & John Amaechi weren’t even well known players during their careers and gained more fame and recognition for being gay than being a good athlete.
