Uber Spontaneously Marries Eight Couples To Celebrate One Year Of Marriage Equality In CA

Screen Shot 2014-07-04 at 11.58.49 AMPride weekend in San Francisco marked one year since marriage equality returned to California, prompting car service app Uber to celebrate the double-occasion in its hometown with the most awesome promotion ever.

On Saturday, June 28, Uber offered the #UberWedding option to anyone willing to get married with the tap of a finger through their app. Throughout the day, eight different couples said “I do” by tapping the #UberWedding button and watching an official pop-up marriage form almost instantly wherever they were in the city.

Couples who got married through Uber on Saturday were treated to an official marriage license, an instant ceremony, and a complete honeymoon package from HotelTonight and Alaska Air.

In a note posted to Uber’s blog, Uber SF GM Wayne reiterated Uber’s dedication to the LGBT community:

As a member of the LGBT community, this weekend is also personal for me and many of us at Uber. We are indebted to those who fought for our rights from Stonewall to Harvey Milk to Edith Windsor. We have come a long way as a community, but we are not quite there yet. We know the responsibility is on all of us to carry forth the torch – and we at Uber are committed to this fight for equality for all.
