In a bold step (well, bold for red state Virginia) Governor Mark Warner has included sexual orientation in the list of things you cannot discriminate against in the workplace. This puts Virginia into the list of 27 other states that have protections for GLBT workers.
“This is a step that isn’t that groundbreaking,” said Josh Israel, president of the Virginia Partisans Gay & Lesbian Democratic club. “A lot of states have done this. A lot of businesses have done this.”
But, he added, “It’s great for Virginia to have a government that is protecting its employees. That’s only going to attract the best employees to Virginia.”
Sure, it just means that Virginia is moving into the twenty-first century, but when it comes to anti-discrimination legislation, we’ll take it however we can.
