In Sam, a young girl escapes into the fields that surround her home after she being bullied and beaten at school for dressing as a boy and spends the night to choose between who she is and who society thinks she should be.
Director Sal Bardo tells Queerty he made the short film, which has received acclaimed screenings at nearly two dozen queer festivals, to contribute something to the conversation about antigay bullying after a series of teen suicides began generating media attention a few years ago.
“I didn’t want to make a public service announcement, but instead try to draw the audience into this child’s world and see life from her perspective,” he says of the contemplative film. “I’m also really interested in exploring topics that I’m not all that familiar with, so I chose to make the character a girl confronting her gender identity, which is another issue that I think deserves more attention.”
