Will watching surprise engagement videos ever get old? Not if they’re as joyous as this one. When Dustin went to the Home Depot in Salt Lake City, he thought he was helping his roommate pick out lighting for a party. But when he was led to the lumber aisle, he discovered friends and family who broke into a flash mob and ultimately a marriage proposal from his boyfriend Spencer — all choreographed to the song “Somebody Loves You” by Betty Who.
Here’s hoping they make it past their wooden anniversary.

Not on their customer site, but on their internal employee site & print newsletter… yeah it’s possible. They are big on “diversity and inclusion” (even in states like Utah where that’s discouraged by laws & culture). You can be fired for being gay in Utah, but not at THD.
This event probably had the involvement of openly gay employees, and as @Goforit: points out, it must have had store manager approval, probably higher level too.

Actually if you have been to Utah or know lots of Mormons you will know that this is not uncommon. Mormon kids are sort of taught to go overboard for simple things. i.e. don’t just ask a girl out, remove the distributor cap on her car, then put a bunch of balloons under the hood of the car attached to a sign asking her to the prom.
Or, if you are a girl and asking a guy out, she would have different friends come up to him throughout the day each with a cupcake with one word on it that when they are put together would have a message.
Trust me, this was pure normal in Utah. And THAT is the problem that the Mormons are having with gays. These guys were obviously raised Mormon. And Their families and friends are obviously ok with them being gay and most likely have left the church.
The Church doesn’t know how to deal with the fact that Devout Mormon families keep having gay kids!!

I believe in love and I’m currently with an amazing guy that I hope to be mine forever one day. However, this is such a vulgar display! What about intimacy? Why the need to have a movie (shot from 3 different angles) made? This is the definition of over the top and as someone said, desperate for their 15 minutes. Yeah Yeah Yeah….its their money and they can do whatever they want, I know…but that doesn’t mean that theyre not attention seekers for this.
My man better take me to a lake or a vineyard and propose…so I can accept and hold him for hours while we cry tears of joy….Not fucking spend thousands of dollars at a stinking home depot.

Criticizing how a gay person goes about proposing to his partner, on a gay web site, in an manner that was completely filled with love by everyone involved is pretty low. @contos: I could not agree more. I do not understand why people are so mean ,weather it was fake or over done or cheesy, or trying to get 15 minutes of fame, it was what the man proposing wanted to. And when fagburn said he hoped he said no was just ugly and jealous. Be happy for other people and wish them well with any luck it will come back to you with good luck and happiness. I thought it was beautiful and to be brave enough to do it at home Depot with all the straight men there I thought took balls.
Pray for me my gay brothers that I find someone who wants to build a life with me. I’ve had a couple of relationships that have failed and and it’s my time to find one that’s a winner. It’s what we all want, let’s be happy for those who have already got it.

@Joe Dalmas: Oh I do, there have been quite a few flashmobs, some of them not even marriages that have shocked the person. You don’t expect it. There was one at Disney where the girl didn’t even know it had anything to do with them until the guy joined it at the very very end from standing with her and then proposed.

I find the most encouraging thing about this video is the four very young boys sitting on the right side. To me they indicate REAL progress. They are at the age when males have always been most susceptible to some degree of gay panic. The fact that they are so obviously on board (with no trace of embarrassment) is not only a sign of their acceptance, but makes me think their peers are probably not foaming at the mouth homophobes either. I may be wrong about that last part, but I hope not.

I don’t get how so many folks are bitter, jaded and miserable that they have to watch a video like this – which CLEARLY the guy who put this all together put a great deal of time to coordinate (and capture on film for BOTH of them to be able to look back and enjoy later) – and not just enjoy it for what it is…an outward sign of love and a promise of a life-long commitment.
I say that videos and actions like this by happily-committed gay couples add unique validity to the argument FOR FULL MARRIAGE RIGHTS FOR GAY COUPLES!

I love how the moment somebody shows any reservation about the overblown nature of these kinds of proposals, a whole bunch of knee jerk responses come right out of the wood work labeling that person hateful, self-hating, closeted, lonely, a loser and bitter.
Are we really so childish and bitchy that we can’t accept or see how someone might see something that should be an intimate moment of commitment between two people turned into a circus and a vaudeville show as maybe overblown and perhaps even garish. It doesn’t mean that the person who thinks that is some hateful jerk who should have his gay card stripped.
I personally find very public overproduced proposals to be the very definition of classless and yes straight men who propose to their women on the jumbotron in front of thousands of people are being tacky too. There is nothing intimate about it, you’re just unzipping your pants and showing everybody just how big your d@*k is. Love is wonderful and it is beautiful but a flash mob proposal is just tacky.
Living as openly gay, holding hands with your man(or woman) maybe even kissing him in public because you want to and because it feels good (Not because you’re trying to make a point) to me is the best way to show that being gay has every right to be out in the open as anything else. The rest is just show business.
I know I would cringe if I were proposed to like this. It’s not that it can’t be in public. Please go ahead, do it in the middle of 6th avenue if you’re compelled. But leave the professional camera crew at the studio. If it is to be our moment then I sure as hell don’t need for it to be on youtube.
