WATCH: Gay Maryland State Senator Looking Forward To Marrying His Partner

Rich Madaleno is the first and only openly gay person to serve in Maryland’s State Senate, so the fact that voters have upheld the state’s same-sex marriage law holds a particular and deeply personal relevance.

Although for the senator and his partner, Mark Hodge,  this is just a chance to finally put it on paper.

“Do we intend to get a license? Yes. We were married 11 years ago,” Madaleno told The Washington Post. “We have no intention of putting our friends through having to buy us another round of gifts from Crate & Barrel.”

And that’s where you made your first mistake, Madaleno. A legit marriage license at least calls for a ceremonious registry at a mid-tier department store.
