Usually cool and collected, Jennifer Connelly goes against type as a unhinged single mom in Dustin Lance Black‘s directorial debut, Virginia, coming to theaters on Friday.
The film weaves together both comedic and tragic storylines, including Connelly’s desperate bid for her longtime lover (Ed Harris), her son’s attempts to discover his father’s identity, a botched bank robbery, a shootout, a fake pregnancy, a cross-dressing arcade manager and more.
In addition to Harris and Connelly, the film boasts a star-studded cast: Toby Jones (Captain America), Carrie Preston (True Blood) and Amy Madigan (Gone Baby Gone), plus breakout performances from Emma Roberts (Valentine’s Day) and Aussie newcomer Harrison Gilbertson, as Harris and Connelly’s willful teen kids.
Virginia premieres May 18 in New York and L.A.

I saw this at TIFF a few years ago, as I am a die hard Jennifer Connelly fan. It was really good, and original.
